The annual fundraising golf tournament will be held at the Lloydminster Golf and Country Club on Thursday, July 19. The Goat is once again co-hosting the tournament. Registration begins at 7:45 am and golfers tee-off at 9 am.
All participants receive a tournament gift, 18 holes of Texas scramble golf, use of a power cart, steak supper, a charitable tax receipt and at least one prize. “We have 104 people registered right now but we hope to have 120 golfers in the tournament,” said Alan Rogan, athletics director at Lakeland College. The entry fee is $250 per person and hole sponsorship opportunities are available. Please contact Alan Rogan at 780 853 8405 or e-mail alan.rogan@lakelandc.ab.ca for more information or to register.
Money raised will be used to offset travel and uniform costs for the Rustlers. Rogan hopes the tournament will raise more than $20,000 for the athletics program. Lakeland’s two volleyball, three curling, and two basketball teams compete in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and the rodeo team competes in the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.
The 2006-07 season was a great success with six of the seven ACAC teams making the playoffs, including the mixed and men’s curling teams that won gold. For the third year in a row a Rustler basketball player (Clarence Smith this year) was named All-Canadian. The Rustlers also had 14 ACAC all-stars and curling coach Peter Wilkinson was named coach of the year.
“On paper, things are looking even better for the 2007-08 season. We’ve recruited some solid student athletes and our coaches are optimistic that we will have very competitive teams,” said Rogan.
Established in 1913, Lakeland College has campuses in Vermilion and Lloydminster and a learning centre in Strathcona County.
