Prospective students can save money on tuition fees thanks to two new Lakeland initiatives

(Lloydminster, Alta. – Oct. 17, 2007) — Lakeland College today announced the launch of two new initiatives that will result in reduced tuition fees for many students attending the college next fall.

Alice Wainwright-Stewart, vice president of academics at Lakeland College, announced the initiatives during a news conference at the Lloydminster campus this morning.

“Today we’re announcing a significant addition to our awards program with the introduction of the academic excellence scholarship program. Students currently in Grade 12 who had a minimum average of 85 per cent in five Grade 11 subjects are eligible for a substantial scholarship if they take university studies or a business program at Lakeland College,” said Wainwright-Stewart.

Students with a minimum average of 85 per cent qualify for a $1,500 scholarship, a minimum average of 90 per cent means a $2,500 scholarship, and students with an average of 95 per cent or greater will receive a $3,500 award. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must currently be in grade 12 and must take a full-course load at Lakeland College starting next fall. The scholarship will be applied directly towards tuition fees.

“This is a great opportunity for Grade 12 students to turn their good marks into great savings at Lakeland College,” she said.

Wainwright-Stewart also provided information on a new tour incentive program. People who live more than 100 km away from the campus they want to tour will receive a tuition credit for mileage and their meals. The amount of the tuition credit ranges from a minimum of $128 to a maximum of $576. Everyone who takes a tour is also entered into a draw to win $1,000 towards their tuition.

“When it comes to recruiting students, we know that a campus tour is one of the most effective ways to convince a prospective student to attend,” she said. “We’ve introduced this tour incentive program to encourage more people to come for a visit because nothing beats walking on campus and talking with people face-to-face to really get a feel for Lakeland College.”

During the news conference it was also announced there will be a January intake of students in university studies, business programs, and academic upgrading. More information was also provided on the college’s Open House and Career Fair at the Vermilion campus on Oct. 24 and the Open House at the Lloydminster campus on Oct. 25. People who apply for 2008 admission during either Open House will not have to pay an application fee.
