Hands-on skills and the ability to use those skills in the small animal clinic and college farm are what our students and graduates talk about. Along with the Lakeland atmosphere.

Here are some comments about the most important concepts our about-to-graduate students said for academic 2009-10:
  • "I believe that the labs are where I learned the most important concepts. Everything was important and relevant to the profession. But the labs really put it into perspective and taught you how to do things."
  • "All the practical skills and the confidence to do it."
  • "My lab work was probably the most beneficial of everything. Everything that we learn in lecture and lab all carries over in the end to our job itself."
  • "How to make everything work as a team, even when you feel like its not going to be easy Working with small animals. I had no experience."
  • "It was a fantastic program. it was very hard and at times extremely challenging, and we had a lot to learn but in the end it was worth it :)"
  • "I really enjoyed being at Lakeland, the staff and campus are amazing. I love the atmosphere around here and will recommend this institution to anyone. I’m glad I chose to come here."
  • "The program itself was wonderful to be a part of. At times it was time consuming and the memory work involved seemed impossible. But the staff for this program really helped us out a lot. It was a lot of fun and I would recommend it to people interested."
  • "This program provides tons of opportunities to learn and hands on experiences. Having the on campus farm and SPCA animals coming in is a great asset as well."

Responses from 2009-10 about-to-graduate students when asked What is/are the most important concept(s) you learned from this program?

Many students picked out particular courses—range management, nutrition, artificial insemination and genetics. Here’s a sampling of the particulars:
  • "Different methods and ways of lambing and calving than what I learned from my family farm, how to keep better business records, and more in depth study of theory."
  • "While many of the courses were geared towards people without a farm background, many of the teachers would still challenge us in them to reach new goals, or understandings about the industry. I really appreciated the range and forage class, the different electives offered and the beginnings of the Student Managed Farm."
  • "Lakeland College should be very proud of its Ag Programs. I am very glad I chose to be here and have learnt a lot about the industry, myself and why I want to be in it. I will without hesitation recommend Lakeland College Swine. The teacher was awesome and made me like pigs."
  • "The most important concepts that I have learnt from this program are communication skills and how to handle people."

What is/are the most important concept(s) you learned from this program?
  • "Not only did I learn the skills that I came here to learn but I felt that the atmosphere around me was a warming learning environment. The most important concepts I learned would obviously my course material but I also took a much more mature and individualized personality away from Lakeland which is exactly what I need to move on into my future."
  • "Practical experience on the student managed farm and all of the content in our courses, from weeds to combines and accounting. It all adds to our knowledge."
  • "The principles behind farm management."
  • "The main concept that I learned from this program was that technology is always changing in agriculture and it is very important to stay on top of the changes or it is possible to fall behind..."
  • "I think Student Managed Farm was the most important concept because it is very practical and gives us hands on learning. We can apply what we learned in class."
    Other Comments:
  • "I had a wonderful experience at Lakeland College and I have always said that if school was free there would be a million other programs I would love to take just for the heck of it."
  • "Great program. Top notch instructors. Great classes."
  • "I have enjoyed my 2 years here in so many ways. This college is awesome and these were the best 2 years of my life. This college has a great atmosphere and a great teaching staff. This place makes me feel welcomed and at home. These two years I will never forget and thank you for every opportunity that I have received here."

  • "I learned how to properly give medication to cattle and a better way to handle cattle."
  • "I loved how we learned such a variety of topics and how the courses were mostly production based. The physical, hands-on work was very useful. Most important concept I learned was plant and soil science. I also thought achinery was very useful since I never used an air seeder before.
    Other Comments:
  • "I would recommend this course to anyone because it allows students to 'get their feet wet' and because it is transferable, students can continue their studies without having to re-do a year of school."
