Janelle LaBrecque, a second-year business student at Lakeland College’s Lloydminster campus, earned the highest score among all candidates across Canada who wrote the Canadian Investment Funds course (CIFC) exam offered by the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC) in December 2011.
LaBrecque scored an outstanding 97 per cent. Only a student from Ontario tied her top mark and shares a spot with her on the 2011 IFSE Institute CIFC Honour Roll. She’s also the only student from Alberta to make the list.
“I was surprised and happy when I heard the news,” says Labrecque of the phone call she received from the IFSC to tell her of her accomplishment. “I felt confident going into the exam but I didn’t really expect to have the top mark in the country.”
LaBrecque wrote the three-hour exam as part of the college’s FN270 mutual funds class taught by instructor Leanne Sauer. The exam is used as part of her course mark. Passing the national exam is also a licensing requirement for anyone wanting to sell mutual funds in Canada.
Sauer isn’t surprised that LaBrecque scored so well on the industry exam and says that as a student, she works very hard on her studies and has an excellent grasp on the material.
“Janelle has a quiet way about her but she really understands the concepts of business,” says Sauer. “During class discussions, she’ll often know the answers to questions but she will wait to give other students the opportunity to answer first or wait until she’s called upon.”
LaBrecque is originally from St. Paul, Alta. She’s the only one in her family that has a passion for the financial services field – her mother is an addictions counselor for a health authority and her older siblings work in the oil/gas and retail sectors.
“I always thought I’d work in the human services area but I have to say that my instructors have really helped me develop an interest in the financial services field. All of them have been really great and I look forward to seeing where I will go in my career,” says LaBrecque.
LaBrecque will graduate from Lakeland on June 1 and hopes to forge a career in the financial services sector in the Lloydminster area.
As a reward for earning the top mark on the exam and being on the IFSE Institute CIFC Honour Roll, LaBrecque received an Apple iPod Touch from the IFIC.
