Beginner & Intermediate Piano

Thomas Laurence sitting at piano

Thomas Laurence

Thomas Laurence grew up in a very musical family. Influenced by his father, he began piano lessons when he was 8 years old.

He loved jazz, and didn't learn classical music until he was 14. That didn't stop him from earning his Royal Conservatory of Music grade 9 a year later. Over the years he has dabbled in Gregorian chant, polyphony, jazz, classical, soundtrack, alternative rock and techno.

Thomas began composing instrumental music as soon as he began playing the piano. Now he both sings and writes music for his band, The Sensational Fluff. He formed the band with a cousin and some friends about the same time he started teaching beginner piano at Lakeland's Vermilion campus.

Thomas has a versatile teaching style. He wants to discover his students' favorite genres. From his own experience he knows practice is less hard work than fun if  you enjoy the songs you are learning. As students progress they will be introduced to more genres. He encourages creativity and is able to teach basic composition.

Thomas believes music is a powerful gift that will always be with you, " It is a source of comfort, joy, pleasure, consolation and fun, and anyone can do it if they are willing to practice," he says.

He welcomes all ages and skill levels.
