Well Site Supervisor – Online & Onsite

Go forward in the industry by certifying your expertise as a wellsite supervisor.

Working with industry, Lakeland College has developed this online program to evaluate and validate wellsite supervisor competencies.

Choose from either the drilling supervisor or completions supervisor certificates (See drop downs for detailed descriptions).

This competency-based program is a 3-step process:
  1. Knowledge review and self-assessment –a review of the competencies and an optional self-assessment quiz
  2. Quiz –a timed quiz on the content. 90% is required to pass
  3. Validation – onsite assessment by a regional validator

You’ll use our learning management system, Desire2 Learn, for your online coursework including the reviews and quizzes.

To complete the requirements you’ll request an onsite assessment with a regional validator.

When you’ve successfully passed all three steps, you’ll receive a certificate of completion. You’ll also be sent the completion letter via email and regular mail.

This certification can be renewed annually (See drop down for details)
What do drilling and completions supervisors do? View More ∇
Both drilling wellsite supervisors and completions wellsite supervisors ensure the work is done safely, efficiently and in compliance with applicable legislation.

Additional responsibilities include: site management, daily reporting, cost tracking, ordering materials and services, project execution, improving productivity and creating efficiencies.

The difference is that a drilling supervisor manages drilling the well and a completions supervisor manages the completion of a wellsite.

Both usually work for a contractor.

Why a competency program? View More ∇
Industry identified it needed a method to both evaluate and validate wellsite supervisor competencies.

The objectives were:
  • improve safety and quality of onsite work
  • provide a consistent, industry-wide, easy-to-access process that also promotes continuous learning
  • provide a baseline industry competency. Among its benefits is employment mobility.
  • meet the spirit and intent of industry recommendation practice (IRP 7)

For about 3 years industry experts worked with Lakeland College to develop a program that would not only assess and validate wellsite supervisor competency, but also enhance skills.

This is one of the reasons for an annual certification fee. If you have a competency certificate, you'll be notified of any changes or additions. This means you'll be able to stay current with industry demands.

Wellsite supervisor competencies include:
  • Leadership, personal and business skills
  • Health, safety and environmental skills
  • Drilling operations and/or completion and well servicing operations
  • Awareness of regulations and industry recommended practice (IRP)

One of the goals of this program is baseline competency in the industry. This system requires upkeep. In particular:
  • to stay up- to -date with industry recommended practices and regulatory requirements
  • for certificate holders maintain and enhance their skills and knowledge

If you have a certificate, you are responsible for keeping it current in the system. This is the same as other occupations with an annual certification or licensing fee.

It also means industry can rely on certified wellsite supervisors to have the necessary skills and knowledge.

You’ll receive an email before your certificate expires. This includes renewal instructions. It might also include a new requirement to keep your certificate current.

If you don’t renew your certificate, then you would need to enroll and complete the competency program again.
