Learning Just Isn't in Class

While academics should be a priority for every student, academic life isn’t the only aspect of a college student’s life. Here are some of things you should know and keep in mind to support your student starting with classes and studying.

Class Time--Students will spend from 25 to 29 hours per week in classes depending on their program.

Hours of Study--Every student develops their own study schedule, based on individual judgment and universal deadlines. Some students may need to learn how to study when they come to college since they may not have been academically challenged until now.

The Learning Centre (TLC) offers noon hour study skills workshop. No matter how your student did in high school, encourage them to attend one of these informative workshops that deal with everything from how to read a textbook to calming exam anxiety!
More about studying

A general rule of thumb is that students will need to spend one to two hours of study for every hour of class.

Generally, college students have to spend more time studying than high school students, but nobody can study all the time. Many students work hard during the week to get their work done, so that they can have fun on the weekend and relieve some of the tension caused by academic pressures.

It is worthwhile to note that the amount of studying does not always directly correlate with marks earned -- study efficiency and material retention are better predictors of academic success.

Working and extracurricular activities
Many people insist that during the academic year students should concentrate solely on school work in order to make good grades. Studies on this subject have shown that students who either work part-time or are involved in some kind of sport, student leadership or other extracurricular activity do better academically than students who just study.
Special Times
Whether it's the Christmas Gala or awards night, there are many special occasions at Lakeland College. Some events are just for students. The gala for example typically brings out everyone's best dress-up clothes.

Other events for you to share are open houses and convocation. Check the events calendar to see what's happening on campus.
Recreation, Clubs & Athletics--some of Campus Life
Recreation puts the spice into college life. Students who are active in intramural activities or join athletic teams make friendships that often last a lifetime, have great opportunities to blow off a little steam after a hard day of studying, and quite simply have a lot of good, clean, healthy fun!

As an added bonus, physically active students have proven to be more successful at their studies than those who choose not to participate in extra-curricular activities.

Opportunities to participate are almost limitless. They range from intramurals and competitive teams, to a variety of clubs, to simply working out in our weight room or shooting hoops in the gym. Students have free access to all facilities with their ID card.

Students can find out about all the upcoming activities and events on campus in the weekly student papers, The Express (Vermilion) or The Excelorator (Lloydminster), as well on the online calendar.
