Lakeland has for several years explored energy research in both traditional and non-traditional energy sectors (e.g., biogas, biodiesel and other energy topics). The College has recently completed construction of the Renewable Energy Learning Centre at the Centre for Sustainable Innovation research site (Vermilion campus). The Centre for Sustainable Innovation (Lakeland CSI) research site blends environmental, energy, agriculture, and building construction research. The Renewable Energy Learning Centre is a multi-systems research and demonstration building showcasing a retrofitted high energy efficiency building envelope, with heat coming from solar thermal and geothermal and electricity from solar photovoltaic and wind in a grid-tied application. Future expansion anticipates additional facilities for research on bio-energy and solar thermal heat storage.
Lakeland College has taken a significant leadership role in the development of the Regional Business Accelerator, based in Lloydminster. This grassroots-led organization forms part of the College’s strategy to increase collaborations with small to medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region. College faculty and staff provide support to regional businesses as mentors and coaches. This includes several energy companies focused on developing new tools and services for the heavy oil and gas industry in the region. Lakeland has acted as a conduit to the advanced expertise available in intensive research organizations within the province for local SME partners. If resources permit, Lakeland would like to explore the development of skunkworks and incubation space for heavy oil and gas entrepreneurs within the proposed expansion of the Heavy Oil Operations Technology facilities (Lloydminster).
