Rustlers Earn Sweep over Huskies

This past weekend saw the Rustler’s men’s volleyball team complete their first sweep of the season winning two matches from Keyano College in Fort McMurray.

The first night saw the Rustlers show up and play a very strong game that put Keyano off balance and struggling to keep up the whole match.  When play was done, the Rustlers won the match 25-20,27-25, and 25-19 for their first sweep since their first league game against Grand Prairie.  The offense was well spread around with Josh Firlotte having 8 kills from the right side while Shawn Wawryk and Joel Walker having 7 kills each from the middle.  Left side hitters Brett Dombrova and Zane Hardes contributed 7 kills each.  Darcy Geseron had 9 digs from the Libero position.  It was a well rounded effort by the team and showed the balance that is developing with the team.

On Saturday afternoon, the two teams squared off again to conclude the weekend.  Keyano got off to a good start with a 25-19 win.  The second game was tight with the Rustlers squeaking out a close win 25-23 with some excellent work by Mike Hunter in a supporting role.  The next two games were split with Keyanon winning the third game and the Rustlers coming back to win the fourth game and then never looking back as they took game 5  15-12 to complete the sweep.  Highlights of the game were Brett Dombrova’s 10 kills to go with 9 for Josh Firlotte while Joel Walker had 8 kills and Shawn Wawryk had 7.  Shawn also had a match high 7 blocks.  Darcy Geseron also had 14 digs in the match.

This action ended play for the first semester.  The team finished with a record of 4 wins and 6 losses to finish 4th in the North Division.  It was definitely a good start to the season and we look forward to seeing the success continue into the second semester.
