The Rules

Green Cup LogoFun is the first rule of the Green Cup street hockey tournament. There are also a few other rules to keep everything running smoothly and make the tournament enjoyable for everyone.

These are listed by category below.
General Tournament rules
  • Have fun and keep your stick on the ground.
  • The organizers and committee of the Green Cup Street Hockey tournament have the right to remove any attendee (spectator or participant) from the tournament and premises and bar them from returning to the tournament. If a participant is ejected from any of the Green Cup events, including but not limited to, the kick-off party or actual tournament, they will be barred from participating in any other Green Cup events or activities.
  • Teams must arrive for registration 30 minutes before their first game of the tournament or they will be subject to disqualification from the tournament
  • All players must wear gloves. The gloves do not have to be hockey gloves; they just have to be gloves that provide some protection against falling or from sticks hitting hands.
  • The tournament organizers and committee of the Green Cup Street Hockey Tournament, Lakeland College (its agents, officers, directors, employees, volunteers, and representatives), the students association at Lakeland College, and the Enviro Club are not responsible for any injuries or damages to personal property. All players must sign a waiver before they are allowed to participate.
  • Any decision the organizers or committee of the Green Cup Street Hockey Tournament make is final. There is no appeal process.
  • All competitors and attendees must be of legal age. Legal age in Alberta is 18. Valid photo identification will be required.
  • Games will be played 4 on 4 (4 players per team on the playing surface + a goalie).
  • Games will run for 50 minutes, straight time (two 25 minute halves).
  • All teams must report to the tournament organizers 10 minutes prior to game time. If a team does not field 4 players and a goalie, they will default or my agree to play shorthanded. There is a maximum 5 minute grace period from the scheduled start time of the game for a team to field 4 players and goalie, or a victory will be awarded to the opposing team.
  • Games will be refereed and players are expected to abide by the rules. Referees have the final say on any dispute.
  • Referees will record the scores and report them to the tournament organizers.
  • Each team is responsible for providing their own equipment.
  • Equipment required by each team includes, but is not limited to: hockey sticks, water bottles, goalie equipment, and a helmet for the goalie.
  • Player helmets are recommended but not required.
  • Goalies are required to wear a helmet that encloses their face (for example: a helmet with a cage).
  • All teams must be paid in full and registered before they are allowed to participate.
  • Identification may be required for each player before the start of each game. This is to ensure that teams are not "swapping" players. Remember: maximum 11 players per team.
  • The ball will be supplied by the tournament organizers. This ball will be used for game play unless both teams agree to the use of a different ball. The ball will be an “orange hockey ball.”
  • There will be no refunds of the entry fee. If a team is ejected from the tournament, they will not be refunded their entry fee.
  • Consumption of alcohol is not permitted on or near the event area.
  • Games will be played two at a time (on two different courts).
  • There will be no series. Only single games to determine a winner.
  • Tie Break Rules
  • In the result of a tie game, a shoot out will be used to determine a winner
  • If there is a tie in a final: A sudden death overtime will be played for 10 minutes or until a teams scores. This goal wins the game. If no one scores in overtime, a shoot-out will be used to determine the winner.
  • Shoot Out Rules
    1. A coin toss will be used to determine which team shoots first. The winning team of the coin toss chooses if they shoot first or second.
    2. The goalie is not allowed to add equipment that they were not wearing during previous game play.
    3. The players will not begin their shot until the referee blows the whistle to indicate the start.
    4. There will be no goals allowed on rebounds. As soon as the goalie touches the ball, the play is dead. This includes poke checks by the goalie.
    5. The ball must remain in a forward motion. The shooting player cannot stop or backup unless the ball is continuing to travel forwards.
    6. An NHL style shoot out will be used. Three players from each team shoot once each and the total goals will be tallied to determine the winner. If there is still a tie after the 3 shooters from each team, the shoot out will continue in a sudden death format. If one player from a team scores and the other does not, the team that scored wins.
    7. The referee has the final say in disputes during the shoot out.
    8. All players of a team must shoot before a player can shoot again.
Round Robin Rules (if that format is used)
  • A win in regulation time is worth 2 points in a round-robin format.
  • A loss is worth 0 points in a round-robin format.
  • A shoot-out loss is worth 1 point in a round-robin format.
  • A shoot-out win is worth 2 points in a round-robin format.
  • If a round-robin format is used, winning the shoot out will only add 1 goal to the teams overall score for the game. For example: if a team wins the shoot out by scoring 3 goals and the game was tied 2-2 prior to the shoot out, the team wins by 3-2.
  • In the event of a tie in team standings (total points) at the end of round robin the following format will be used as the tie break:
    1. 1. Total goals for
    2. 2. Total goals against
    3. 3. A shoot out as listed in #3 (above)
    4. 4. If not enough players are found for a sudden death shoot-out, a coin toss will be used.
  • In the event of a tie with a team receiving a win because the other team forfeited, the average of the scores of the previous game(s) will be used to determine the teams total goals for and against
  • Playing Rules
The referee's role is to ensure that game is fair, safe and enjoyable for both teams

    Penalties

  • Minor penalties are 2 minutes and major penalties are 5 or 10 minutes.
  • Minor penalties end if a power play goal is scored and major penalties are served for their duration, even if a goal is scored.
  • The official may also award two minor penalties to one player at a time (a double minor penalty).
  • The official may also award a game misconduct (game ejection), along with a major penalty, if they deem it is warranted. If a player receives a game misconduct, they will be barred from the tournament.
  • In the event that a game misconduct (game ejection) is given to a player by an official, the player will automatically be barred from further play in the tournament

    Types of Penalties
    1. Abuse of an official: Abuse of the official (referee) will result in an automatic misconduct (ejection) of the player(s) involved in the abuse. Note: a game misconduct results in the player being barred from playing in the remainder of the tournament.
    2. The official has the final say. During any dispute, the official (referee) determines the final verdict. The official also has the right to stop the game and declare a winner if they deem the game to be getting out of hand, in terms of roughness.
    3. Fighting: any players involved in fighting (what the referee determines to be fighting), will be removed from the tournament (player is ejected from the game and the player’s team must play 10 minutes shorthanded). Furthermore, the remaining players on a team who had players involved in fights will be given a warning, if the fighting continues that team will be ejected from the tournament.
    4. Body Contact: This a non-contact tournament. Excessive contact will be deemed a minor penalty, unless the referee deems that a major penalty is warranted.
    5. Unsportsmanlike Conduct & Delay of Game: We are here to have a good, enjoyable time. In the event that someone is being unsportsmanlike and/or delaying the game, a minor penalty will assessed unless the referee deems that a major penalty is warranted. Near the end of a game (within the last 10 minutes), the referee may award a penalty shot (at the referee’s discretion).
    6. Intent to Injure: Any blatant attempt to injure an opponent will follow the same rules as fighting (rule #3) and a warning will be given to the team. Remember, two warnings and the team is ejected from the tournament. Note: a game misconduct results in the player being barred from playing in the remainder of the tournament.
    7. Slashing, Tripping, Cross-Checking, Elbowing, Hooking, Holding, & Roughing: These are all minor penalties, unless the referee deems that a major or double minor penalty is warranted.
    8. Spearing & Butt-ending: These are major penalties. The referee may also give a game misconduct penalty (game ejection) along with these major penalties. Note: a game misconduct results in the player being barred from playing in the remainder of the tournament.
    9. High Sticking: Sticks must be kept below the waist at all times. If there is contact between a stick at shoulder level or above, the referee will assess a minor penalty, unless they feel a major penalty is warranted. Also: if a player is trying to play the ball with a stick above their shoulder, a minor penalty will be assessed.
    10. Slap Shots: On any shots taken by both players and goalies, their hockey stick may not come above their waist. If the stick does come above the players waist on a shot, a minor penalty shall be assessed. If there is contact between a player’s stick and of an opponent at shoulder level or higher, while a player is taking a shot, a double minor penalty will be assessed. If a goal is scored on any shot, where the player’s stick comes above their waist, the goal will be disallowed.
    11. Hand Pass: A player cannot use any part of their body, above their waist, to direct or pass the ball to a teammate. If this occurs, a face-off will be held at the place where the infraction occurred.
    12. Ball Out of Bounds: If the ball goes out of bounds, the ball becomes dead and the referee will award the ball to the opponent of the last player who caused the ball to go out of bounds. Do not fight over the possession of the ball.
    13. Disallowed Goals: As in regular ice hockey, a goal shall not count if the ball is directed into the net by any other means than a hockey stick. If the ball is directed into the net by a high stick (above the waist), the goal shall not count.
    14. Icing & Off-side: There is no icing or off-side in this tournament.
