Provincial honours for Lakeland parts tech< More Stories
“It’s pretty exciting, I was completely taken by surprise when I won the award,” says Niedzielski. “It’s going to take a while for it to sink in that it’s a provincial award.”
Niedzielski is one of three Lakeland apprentices to receive a 2016 Top Apprentice Award; Devon Froland earned the provincial honours in carpentry and Dean Coulson for heavy equipment technician – transport trailer mechanic. A total of 62 apprentices received awards.
“During Samantha’s time at Lakeland she radiated passion, whether it was directed toward her chosen trade or at those around her and it has carried with her to this day,” says Randy Hobbis, Lakeland College instructor. “I couldn’t be more proud of her.”
Beginning a new career at Dennill’s Agricenter in Dewberry, Alta., in 2012, Niedzielski started working in the trade. She became a parts technician after completing her technical training at the Vermilion campus as well as the required 4,500 hours of on-the-job training, in 2015. She is also a graduate of Lakeland’s animal science technology program.
“Randy and Chris (Noster), they always did their best to ensure we were all prepared for the final exams,” says Niedzielski of her instructors. “I enjoyed being in class with them.”
The Top Apprentice Awards honours apprentices in their respective trade who achieved the highest overall marks in their final period of training and received strong employer recommendations.
“Samantha is an extremely positive person and has a calm, confident attitude about her that touches everyone around her. She will always greet you with a smile and is genuinely dedicated to helping her clients,” says Morley Dennill, owner of Dennill’s Agricenter.
Niedzielski was joined by her husband Shaun, and her parents and siblings in Edmonton. Jeff Fluney, Dennill's parts manager, was also in attendance.
Parts technician is one of nine apprenticeship trades offered at Lakeland College’s Trades Centre at the Vermilion campus. Lakeland also offers periods one and three of the parts technician program online.
