Celebrating LC Medalists

Convocation 2010 brought more than just diplomas for  Kirk Kiesman and Chelsea Gatzke as they were honoured respectively with the President's and Governor General's medal.

The president's medal is the most prestigious award given by Lakeland College. It recognizes a graduting student who has demonstrated academic excellence and leadership in student activities. The award is by nomination with the awards committee making a recommendation to the president.

Kiesman, who was the SA president, was also a leader in student-managed farm activities as part of his animal science technology program. From Moosehorn, Manitoba, he is planning to continue his studies at the University of Alberta this fall.

Established in 1873, the governor general's medal recognizes the graduating student with the highest academic standing at diploma level post-secondary institutions across Canada. The medal is numbered, engraved with the Royal Arms of Canad and the recipient is registered with the Chancellery of Canadian Orders and Decorations at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.

Gatzke, who graduated from the conservation and restoration technology program, will spend part of her summer in central America working on a biodiversity monitoring project with Operation Wallacea. The Spiritwood, Saskatchewan native will be returning to Lakeland College in the fall to start the bachelor of applied science degree in environmental management.

President Glenn Charlesworth made the presentation to Kiesman. Board chair Doug Elliott made the presentation to Gatzke.
