REGISTRATION 2011 - Campus

FAQs

Questions, questions, questions...you're bound to have them. College may be a completely new experience, and your campus may also be somewhere you've never been before. These FAQs address some of the most common questions new students have. We've broken them down by category. This page has some of the general questions while the links on the right will take you to some more specific areas.

Check out the rest of the fyi. Each campus has an area on this site with specifics for particular programs as well as for residence move in and orientation activities. You'll learn even more at your program orientation and during orientation activities throughout the first couple of weeks.

If you have questions, we're just a phone call away. Call us toll-free at 1 800 661 6490.

Do we attend classes on Registration Day or do we just register that we are here?
Many events occur on Registration Day. All new and returning students must attend a program orientation, as this is the time when classes are finalized and other important documents are completed. You will learn about campus services and how they can help you succeed, as well as get your timetables and schedule of your courses. You will need to be ready to get down to business, as some instructors are ready to start that first day! Well-prepared instructors also know the importance of the first meeting. Be aware that your absence at Registration Day may set a negative tone with your instructor
When and where do we take our pictures?
All new students will have their pictures taken on registration day. Lloydminster students will have one taken for their Student ID card.  Vermilion students will have two pictures taken – one for their Student ID card and a second for yearbook purposes.

Returning students do not need any pictures taken as we have yours on file from last year and your current student ID card is still valid.

Your ID card entitles you to: use the library, access computer labs, obtain internet and e-mail privileges, use the recreation facilities and equipment, and attend Students’ Association activities. Your student ID number is important to remember, as some instructors post grades by ID number.
Where can I park?
In Vermilion, Parking Lots B & C (gravel lots) located across the highway in front of Alumni Hall are unreserved free parking spots.

In Lloydminster, parking lots are located across from the main entrance as well as at the back of the building by the gymnasium.
How do I get a parking pass?
Students living in residence (Lloydminster/Vermilion) are issued a parking pass on move-in day. They can also purchase a parking pass at any time during the year.

Off campus students are required to register for energized stalls when they are available. If there are more requests than available spots, names will be drawn. Watch for posters around campus for more information.
Can I get a locker?
Getting a locker is on a first come basis. When you arrive on campus, all you need to do is purchase a lock and put in on a locker that does not already have a lock on it. It is yours for the duration of the school year. Please remove your lock at the end of the year and clean out your locker.
Will I have computer access while I am a student?
You get access to the computer labs by filling out a form available on registration day. You will be assigned a password from the Information Technology department, which you will also need to obtain before using the computers. This will allow you to access the computers in all the computer labs oncampus. Hours of operation will be posted outside the labs. You will also be assigned 200 sheets of paper for printing purposes. More can be purchased at the Finance Department on Vermilion campus and in Student Services on the Lloydminster campus.

Have your own laptop? Wireless internet access is now available on Vermilion and Lloydminster campuses, including residence buildings. This service is like hotel style wireless.
The network supports Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Macs.

Here are the steps to using wireless:
1. Sign the computer user code of ethics and get you user name & password (will be available on registration day)
2. Sign into a college computer and change—that is personalize--your password.
3. Take a training session for how to sign into wireless. Sessions will be held Tuesdays & Thursdays from 11:30 am -1:30 pm in room AH256.

Before you come to college, make sure that you have virus checker software on your computer. There are free ones available on the web such as AVG and Avast . Extended versions are also available for sale. There are also more well-known for purchase virus checkers such as McAfee and Norton.

How do I sign books out of the library?
Your student ID card is also your Library Card. You must have your student ID card to sign out materials, including reserve materials.
Can I sign books out of either campus library? How about other libraries?
Yes you can! Ask the library staff for assistance in placing a request. Books can be shipped between campuses free of charge.

As well, you may also be able to sign books out from other post-secondary institutions with your Lakeland Student ID Card!

Please remember to return books on time and avoid late fees! A block is placed on any unpaid bills up to a maximum of $50. Students cannot borrow materials until the bill is resolved.

Students can place a hold on items from any NEOS member library and expect a 3 working day turnaround time, or request an item using the interlibrary loan service. Ask library staff for assistance.
Is there a phone on campus that I can use?
Students are welcome to use the courtesy phone at the Information Desk/Student Services on all campuses for local calling only. There are also numerous pay phones on the campuses and around Residence Village for students to use.
What do I need to do if I have a disability and/or special needs?
If you plan to access special needs services, you will need to contact the Special Needs Coordinator at least 4 months before attending Lakeland. You will be requested to provide documentation that explains the nature, severity and functional affects of the disability and how it will impact the specific post-secondary field of study. You must also provide documentation outlining recommendations for accommodations and support services that will permit full and equitable participation in post-secondary study.

How do I get an official transcript
Students can view their unofficial transcripts by accessing their MyLakeland account.

For official transcripts, download the Official Transcript Request form from our website at www.lakelandcollege.ca/campus-life/student-forms/, or request the form at the student services office

Completed forms can either be mailed, faxed or emailed or dropped off at Student Services at both campus locations.
I am bringing my horse to the Vermilion campus. What do I do when I arrive?
Students in the Rodeo Club should confirm arrangements with the rodeo club as to when you will be bringing your horse on campus and where you need to drop it off. Students are either assigned a box stall or a tie stall. It is important that all paperwork is filled in and brought with you when you bring your horse. If you do not bring in the necessary paperwork, the horse cannot be boarded on college property.

For more information, call 1 800 661 6490 ext. 8642 or e-mail rodeo.club@lakelandcollege.ca
What happens if I lose my keys or other items on campus?
Lost and Found is located in the Student’s Association Office on the Vermilion campus, as well as Student Services.

In Lloydminster, Lost and Found is located in several areas: Student Services, Library, Recreation Office, and the Residence Office.

Residents can also sign out an extra set of keys that must be returned within 24 hours. There is a $80 charge for lost residence keys.
Where can I find information about part-time jobs on campus or in the community?

Lakeland College’s Student Employment Advisor has a Job Posting binder that students on the Vermilion and Lloydminster campuses can access for employment opportunities on campus and off campus.

The Student Employment Advisor also has
access to numerous resources that can aid a student’s search for employment, as well as assist them with resume writing, preparing for interviews, and networking with employers.

Students can also drop by the Human Resources department on the Vermilion campus for
