(For immediate release – July 8, 2011)--Lakeland College’s redesigned website hits the electronic highway today.
With a focus on simplicity, the redesign makes it easier for visitors to navigate the site. New additions include mega menus, detailed program pages, plus calls to action on every program page. Popular features such as social media buttons, event calendars, and links to student portals remain but have a fresh look. Site architecture, page naming and content have been updated to be more search engine friendly.
There are also a few new sites within the www.lakelandcollege.ca family including a mobile site to meet the needs of Lakeland’s on-the-go users who want content to download faster and be easier to read. “The website detects whether the visitor is using a smart phone, and if they are, they’re automatically redirected to the mobile site,” says Cathy Wolters, Lakeland’s website coordinator. She noted that Lakeland statistics back up the noticeable need for a mobile site. In June 2010, only .02 per cent of the college’s web traffic came from mobile phones or tablets. By June 2011, the percentage was 11.7.
With Lakeland’s 100th anniversary only two years away, a centennial site has been added. “It’s fairly basic right now but it’s going to grow and develop as we move towards 2013,” says Wolters. Found at www.lakelandcollege.ca/centennial, the site has historic information, a list of centennial events, a short quiz, plus a spot where users can suggest and vote on the top 100 people, events and moments in the college’s history.
Also sporting new looks and redesigned menus are the alumni and friends site and the re-skinned library site. “The changes will make the sites easier to navigate. We’ve also added new pages to the alumni and friends site so we can showcase our alumni and donors,” she says.
As part of today’s launch, Lakeland is running a Facebook contest inviting friends to find links that aren’t working. “We’ve done a lot of testing but we realize that we may have missed some links. We thought this little challenge would be a fun way to get people to explore our website,” says Wolters. People finding errors have a chance to win Lakeland gear.
Lakeland redeveloped the sites with assistance from Marqui, a web marketing company based in Vancouver.
