New agreement expands degree opportunities for Lakeland College graduates at U of S

(July 20, 2010―Vermilion, Alta.)  A new agreement between Lakeland College and the University of Saskatchewan will enable graduates from Lakeland College’s human services programs to advance their credential towards a bachelor degree.

Starting this fall, graduates of Lakeland College’s child and youth care, early learning and child care and educational assistant programs will receive advanced credit standing into the University of Saskatchewan’s bachelor of arts in northern studies program.

Qualified graduates of Lakeland College certificate programs will receive at the U of S advanced standing for 30 credits; graduates of diploma programs will receive 60 credits. A total of 120 credits are required to complete the university’s four-year degree program.

The new agreement applies to eligible Lakeland graduates enrolling at the University of Saskatchewan for studies beginning this September. It also supports Lakeland graduates from years prior to 2010 who want to further their education credential – a key advantage for people currently working in the field and who want to advance their careers.

It also applies to people who graduated from Lakeland College’s early learning and childhood program through Credenda Virtual School, an online institution that serves a large number of communities and residents in Saskatchewan.

“The new agreement between Lakeland and the U of S opens the door to more post-secondary education options for many people,” says Dr. Jason Dewling, associate dean of arts, science, business and academic services at Lakeland College. “More learning opportunities will ultimately lead to continued development of the human services sector.”
