(Nov. 17, 2009 – Vermilion, Alta.) Lakeland College President Glenn Charlesworth announced today that Lakeland College will participate in the Project Hero scholarship program.
As a participant in the Project Hero program, Lakeland College will not charge tuition or residence fees to the dependent children of Canadian Forces personnel killed since 2002 while serving in an active mission.
“Lakeland College’s support is a huge milestone for Project Hero. The college’s support will mean a lot to Canadian military families,” said Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Reed, chairman of Equity Transfer & Trust Company.
Effective immediately, Project Hero scholarships are available for full-time credit programs at Lakeland College. Scholarship recipients must be under the age of 26 and meet program admission requirements. Lakeland College tuition and residence fees will be waived until the completion of the first credential to a maximum of three years.
“It’s very fitting that I announce our involvement in Project Hero today, Lakeland College’s 96th anniversary. When our college doors opened in the fall of 1913, there were 34 students enrolled. When the First World War started in 1914, many of our students answered the call to fight on behalf of Great Britain and some paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said Charlesworth. “Throughout the college’s history, many students and staff have served our country.”
In addition, the college buildings have also served a role in wartime. During the Second World War, the college – then known as the Vermilion School of Agriculture – was closed from 1941 to 1945 and the campus was used as a training centre for the Canadian Women’s Army Corps from 1942 to 1944.
“We have a proud history of supporting our Canadian Forces personnel and today’s announcement is a continuation of that support,” said Charlesworth, adding that the college’s proximity to CFB Wainwright and CFB Cold Lake also played a role in the decision to participate in Project Hero.
