Fire and Emergency Services
About Us
As a school of the college, the emergency training centre fits the Lakeland College practice of quality hands-on training for students who are work force ready.

emergency training centre logoThe emergency training centre’s history as part of the public college is short, only going back to 1998 when Alberta Fire Training School became a subsidiary corporation of the college. However, the two had been neighbours since the fire training school was established nearly a half century ago by the province.

The emergency training centre has three distinct clients: pre-professional students, municipal fire services and corporations. Training is on-site at the emergency training centre, at the client workplace and through distance learning.

There are two pre-professional programs. In both you'll be eligible for internationally recognized certification from IFSAC and ProBoard:
  • Our emergency services technology (EST) program is unique in Canada. Introduced in 1996, the program has a common core in both emergency medical response and fire fighting is followed by specialization in one of those disciplines.
  • The fire fighter training program provides the NFPA Standard 1001 - Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications in an intense 12-week period. Since its introduction in 1998 hundreds of fire fighters have gotten a jump start on their careers.
Both programs have advisory boards with a diverse group of stakeholders who ensure our training meets industry needs. Members include fire chiefs, emergency medical services chiefsas well representatives of municipal government and industrial emergency services.
