Practicum Support
Welcome to practicum support for the EMT and Paramedic programs of Lakeland College.

The drop downs below provide links to resources primarily for preceptors. Students are responsible to ensure:
  • their receptors have access to the web resources
  • both they and their preceptor are familiar with the scope of practice, required forms and the FAQs from each logbook

All the resource documents are available in printer-friendly pdf (PDF) format. Longer manuals are also available as e-documents.

    Before the practicum starts

    1. Preceptors need to get their code for the online logbook. See the drop down below for instructions and link.
    2. Check out the copy of the manual related to the practicum you are supervising. They are available in the drop downs for each program.
    3. View the preceptor presentation (see the preceptor resources and links drop down).
    4. Fill out and fax in the practicum contract (in the manual) before the student's first shift.

    When the student is finished
Make sure the practicum checklist is complete. This document can be found in the drop down for the specific program.

Paramedic Association of Canada Definition of Competence
According to Canadian Medical Association accreditation standards, students must perform each hospital (clinical) or ambulance (field) competency with a patient at least twice successfully.

The Paramedic Association of Canada Board of Directors has approved the following definition of competence, to which Lakeland College’s EMS programs adheres. Preceptors are to measure students against this standard of competence.

Competence involves the demonstration of skills, knowledge and abilities in accordance with the following principles:
    • consistency (the ability to repeat practice techniques and outcomes)
    • independence (the ability to practice without assistance from others)
    • timelines (the ability to practice in a time frame that enhances patient safety)
    • accuracy (the ability to practice utilizing correct techniques and to achieve the intended outcomes)
    • appropriateness (the ability to practice in accordance with clinical standards and protocols outlined within the practice jurisdiction).
