Admission Requirements

  • High School Diploma with a minimum: 60% in English 30 (70% in English 33); 50% in Math 20 or 60% in Math 20 Applied; 60% in Biology 30. 
  • Minimum 18 years of age.    
  • Clear Criminal Record Check including the Vulnerable Sector Check (within three  months of program start date).
  • Statement of good physical and mental health (Health Status Form).
  • Personal Interview is required as well as a letter of intent. 
  • TOEFL 560/220 if English is your second language. 

    Applicants will be invited to attend an orientation session with program staff.

    Applicants must provide evidence of the following immunization requirements: 

  • Diphtheria/Tetanus--Dates of primary series and booster within past 10 years.
  • Varicella--History of chicken pox disease. If no history, or uncertain of chicken pox history, Titre required. If Titre is negative, vaccine is required.
  • Measles/MMR--Persons born before 1970 are considered immune. Persons born after 1970 should have 2 doses of measles/MMR vaccine.
  • Rubella--Date of Rubella vaccine or positive Rubella Titre
  • Tuberculin Test--Annual One or Two step skin testing, unless known positive
  • Hepatitis B--Series of 3 doses must be started before registration (follow up Titre must be done one to six months after third dose)
  • Polio--Dates of Primary Series
  • Flu vaccine and H1N1

  • Graduation Requirements

    Students completing the requirements listed will be awarded a Diploma in Practical Nursing from NorQuest College/Lakeland College.

    Study structure and function of the human body. Emphasis on body organization, support and movement, and integration and coordination of body functions. 45 hours.
    ANPH 1002 Anatomy and Physiology II 3
    Study structure and function of human body. Emphasis on body transport and protection, absorption, excretion and reproduction. Prerequisite: ANPH 1001.
    ENGL 2550 Introduction to Composition 3
    Explore literature genres including fiction and non-fiction and receive formal instruction in writing university-level essays. 45 hours.
    HEED 1000 Health Education: Individual Health & Wellness 3
    Gain overview of physical, social, mental, environmental and spiritual aspects of personal health and wellness within the context of community and Canadian health-care system. Individualized analysis of personal health issues and physical fitness included. 45 hours.
    HEAS 1000 Health Assessment 4
    Learn and practice procedures for obtaining health history and conducting physical examination. Assessment findings for normal structures and functions of human body are identified. Prerequisite/Co-requisite: ANPH 1002. 60 hours.
    NCOM 1000 Communications for Nursing 3
    Study basic therapeutic communication skills to work as a health professional. Learn development of caring relationships between helping professionals and clients and gain basic understanding of self and of working within a group. Prerequisite/Co-requisite: ENGL 2550. 45 hours.
    NFDN 1001 Nursing Foundations I: Introduction to Nursing 4
    Develop basic understanding of health-care system, nursing models, the Neuman Systems Model, the nursing process, history of nursing, ethical and legal aspects of nursing, and roles and responsibilities of the practical nurse. Includes laboratory component. Prerequisites/Co-requisites: HEAS 1000, HEED 1000, NCOM 1000. 60 hours.
    PATH 1000 Pathophysiology for Health Care Professions 3
    Study pathological processes underlying disease and disorders and resulting alterations in human physiological function through life. Prerequisite/Co-requisite: ANPH 1002. 45 hours.
    PSYC 1040 Introduction to Psychology 3
    Learn basic terminology, concepts, questions, theories and empirical data that make up the field of psychology and are pertinent to health-care professional. Focus on human development and learning theory. 45 hours.
    NFDN 1002 Nursing Foundations II: Basic Nursing 7
    Learn basic care skills related to activities of daily living, personal care, psychological care and medication administration and practise skills in laboratory and simulated settings. Expand knowledge of Neuman Systems Model and other concepts presented in NFDN 1000. Prerequisites/Co-requisites: NFDN 1001, HEAS 1000. 105 hours.
    PHAR 1000 Basic Pharmacotherapeutics 3
    Study basic scientific knowledge required for safe administration of medications. Focus on both therapeutic physiological effects and non-therapeutic side effects of medications used in treating clients across their lifespan. 45 hours.
    SOCI 1000 Introduction to the Study of Society 3
    Explore introductory sociology through study of social relations, community and society. Learn about the institutions of Canadian society, such as family, politics, ethnicity, education and religion. 45 hours.
    NFDN 2003 Nursing Foundations III: Medical Surgical Nursing 9
    Focus on applying Neuman Systems Model and nursing process to clients in acute care. Learn basic medical surgical nursing skills and practise skills in laboratory and simulated settings. Prerequisite/Co-requisite: NPRT 1001. 135 hours.
    NFDN 2004 Nursing Foundations IV: Family Nursing I 3
    Explore application of Neuman Systems Model and nursing process to the developing family relating to maternity nursing. Learn about the expectant family before, during and after birth, and the care of the newborn. Prerequisites/Co-requisites: NFDN 2003, PSYC 1040, SOCI 1000. 45 hours.
    NFDN 2005 Nursing Foundations V: Family Nursing II 3
    Study application of Neuman Systems Model and nursing process to the developing family as it relates to pediatric nursing. Prerequisites/Co-requisites: NFDN 2003, PSYC 1040, SOCI 1000. 45 hours.
    NFDN 2006 Nursing Foundations VI: Community Nursing 3
    Study application of Neuman Systems Model and nursing process to promotion of health and prevention of disease and injury throughout life to individuals and within communities and groups. Explore community assessment, health promotion, public health and primary health care concepts. Prerequisite/Co-requisite: NFDN 2004, NFDN 2005. 45 hours.
    NFDN 2007 Nursing Foundations VII: Mental Health 3
    Study application of Neuman Systems Model and nursing process to care of clients with mental health problems in community and institutional settings. Prerequisites/Co-requisites: NFDN 2003, PSYC 1040, SOCI 1000, NCOM 1000.
    NFDN 2008 Nursing Foundations VIII: Transition to Graduate Nursing 3
    Prepare for transition from student to graduate role. Explore how you will work within the parameters of a health-care organization, the bargaining unit and the professional association. Learn about taking a leadership role in work. Prerequisite/Co-requisite: NPRT 2002. 45 hours

    NPRT 1001 Nursing Practice I: Continuing Care Practice (2nd semester) 5
    Gain experience providing safe, holistic nursing care in a continuing care centre through the application of the Neuman Systems Model, the nursing process, basic care skills, medication administration skills and therapeutic communications skills. Clinical practicum involves five weeks of instructor-supervised clinical practice. Prerequisites/Co-requisites: NCOM 1000, PHAR 1000, PATH 1000, NFDN 1002. 194 hours.
    NPRT 2002 Nursing Practice II: Acute Care Practice (3rd semester) 8
    Gain experience in providing safe, holistic nursing care in an acute care centre through the application of Neuman Systems Model, nursing process, medical/surgical nursing skills, medication administration skills and therapeutic communication skills. Clinical practice involves eight weeks of instructor-supervised clinical practice. Prerequisites/Co-requisites: NPRT 1001, NFDN 2003. 310 hours.
    NPRT 2003 Nursing Practice III: Focused Practice (4th semester) 3
    Learn practical skills in clinical practicum involving three weeks of combined instructor-supervised and preceptored clinical practice. Focus on community nursing, leadership and team medications and choice of maternity, pediatric, or mental health nursing. Prerequisites/Co-requisites: NFDN 2006, NFDN 2007, NPRT 2002. 116 hours.
    NPRT 2004 Nursing Practice IV: Comprehensive Practicum (4th semester) 4
    Integrate program knowledge, skills, attitudes and judgments as you gain understanding of the role of the licensed practical nurse. Four weeks of preceptored clinical practice will help make the transition from student to graduate role. Prerequisite/Co-requisite: NPRT 2003. 116 hours.
    Clinical Placement Requirements--Annual re-certification in CPR level C and evidence of up-to-date WHMIS training will be required. Practicum agencies may also require another Criminal Record Check including the Vulnerable Sector Check.
