Champions Again
From the beginning of the season, the Lakeland Rustlers men's futsal team's goal was to retain the ACAC title. Repeating as champions, was no easy task as there was another team to beat and significant improvements to the league quality. In their first tournament of the season, their goal already looked within reach as the Rustlers went a perfect 4 and 0. But it was a different story at Mount Royal University, when the Rustlers went 2 and 2 to finish fourth. The combined effort was enough to earn them a spot in the final four tournament hosted by Medicine Hat College.
With their goal in mind, the Rustlers trained hard for the championship tournament. That training paid off as they went through the round robin with a 3 and 0 record by defeating Keyano College, Olds College and Mount Royal University. Finishing first in the round robin gave the Rustlers a automatic bye to the gold medal game. The Rustlers were not to be denied their second conference championship in as many years scoring a solid 4-1 victory over the Mount Royal University Cougars.
The ACAC title wasn't the only accolade the Rustlers received. Earlier in the week Sven Waelechi was selected to the ACAC All Conference first team, while Omar Amador and Braydon Bretzer were selected to the All Conference second team for their performance over the season.
Individual awards were also handed out to Rustler student athletes at the conference championships in Medicine Hat.
- Waelechi and Bretzer received team MVP awards.
- Keeper Kyle Benson was chosen as the conference championship tournament MVP, the highest individual award of the tournament
