Rustlers Futsal Looking Sharp
January 23 and 24 approximately 100 student athletes from 5 ACAC institutions converged on the Commonwealth Centre in Lloydminster. Lakeland College hosted the inaugural Futsal tournament that kicked into high gear Saturday morning and was exciting from start to finish. For the crowds that reached close to 200 at times, they were treated to a great demonstration of skill that on many occasions brought a round of applause from the stands and numerous cheers.
Saturday the round robin games were held with the Medicine Hat women’s team defeating the ladies by a score of 6 – 0. The ladies bounced back with three straight victories in the round robin defeating King’s College 4 – 0, Briercrest 5 – 4, and Keyano 4 – 3. In the semi finals the Rustlers took on the Huskies again and jumped out to an early lead and never looked back winning 5 – 1. The Rustlers took on the Medicine Hat Rattlers. The Rattlers jumped out to a 2 goal lead before the Rustlers fought back to make it interesting. The game went down to the final whistle with Medicine Hat narrowly defeating Lakeland 3 – 2.
On the men’s side of the draw the crowd was treated to some incredible ball handling and precise passing. The Lakeland Rustlers went through the round robin with a 3 – 0 record defeating Medicine Hat 6 – 0, Keyano 12 -1 and Briercrest 5 – 3. In the semi finals the Rustlers took on the Huskies again and defeated Keyano 6 – 2. The Rustlers hit full stride in the finals as the defeated the Briercrest Clippers 11 – 3.
The weekend was a great success with the Lloydminster community being introduced to the fast paced game of Futsal. Next action for the Rustlers will be February 12 – 14th when they head off to Medicine Hat College.
