Women's basketball off to it's best start
Game 1 saw the Rustlers travel to Edmonton Friday night. Both teams struggled to find there shooting touch as the Nait Ooks held onto a slim 7-6 lead at the end of the 1st Qtr. Lakeland was able to score some easy baskets thanks in large part to their full court pressure, allowing them to take a narrow 23-22 lead into half. The Rustlers were able to take control in the 3rd qtr as they came out on fire to start the frame. Hannah Crease-Mclean scored on 3 consecutive possessions pushing the Rustlers lead to 10. Lakeland was able to hold off a late Nait surge securing a 53-42 win. Marissa Lindquist had a game high 14pts for the Rustlers. Tracy Holloway had 12pts and Hannah Crease-Mclean added 9pts and 6 rebs.
Game 2 was back at Lakeland College where the team saw a packed gym for the home opener. After the low scoring Friday night affair both teams had very offensive 1st qtrs as Nait once again came out to a slim 18-17 lead. In the second frame nothing was decided as the teams traded hoops and Nait took their 1 point lead of 33-32 into the half. Lakeland was once again able to capitalize on Nait’s turnovers as they put up 21 pts and held the Ooks to a mere 12pts in the 3rd qtr. The Rustlers yet again held off a late Ooks run when 5th year senior Dale-Marie Cumberbunch connected on 4 consecutive shots but, Lakeland came out on the right side of a 79-66 finish. 11 players scored for the Rustlers as Brandi Leavitt had a team high 16pts, Hannah Crease-Mclean scored 14pts and Tracy Holloway had 14pts and 7 steals.
Next action for the Rustlers is against Concordia Thunder who is currently the #1 ranked team in the ACAC. The squad will hit the road on Friday and return to the rowdy Lakeland crowd on Saturday night.
