Rustlers Active in the Community

MBB Fr GormanFor the Lakeland College Rustlers Athletics Department asking the students to work hard in their chosen sport and in the classroom are twoMS Frisbee night of the three areas where the teams are asked to excel.  The third area is engaging in the community and  this year, like in previous years, the student athletes have answered the call.  Where ever possible the student athletes have made their presence known.  Some of activities teams have helped with this year include serving a breakfast at a local school, working  with local soccer athletes, running volleyball  and basketball clinics in surrounding schools.  One of the larger initiatives came  near the end of the first semester were the volleyball teams participated in a fundrasier that generated over $1500 with all the proceeds going to help fight the battle against MS.

Balancing all three areas of College life is a challenge for some but for those who engage in community activities the reward of seeing smiling faces is more then enough reward for their time spent.  Aaron Rawlake Athletic Supervisor commented that participating in community activities is the first step for some of our student athletes to actually volunteer to coach once they have completed their post secondary education.   Others might just volunteer with different organizations in their communities but a number of our student athletes leave Lakeland and volunteer to help out in some way where ever they move to.  Once they find out they can have a positive impact on someones life it is a great feeling.

In the new year the amount of time the Rustlers will spend in the community will drop a bit due to  the teams focus on working towards playoff positions, but they do have some events they are planning on helping out with as helping out  almost alway comes with a win win outcome.
