Alan has been a staff member of the athletics and recreation department for over 20 years and has filled many roles in that time.  He spent 13 years as the head coach of the men’s volleyball team and one year with the women’s.  He is currently in his 6th year as the Coordinator of Recreation and Athletics and enjoying the challenges of expanding the athletics department offerings.

Alan and his wife Denise have one son who is hoping that golf will be a sport at Lakeland when he graduates high school many years down the road.

An alumnus of Lakeland College, Aaron was a 2 time ACAC all-conference volleyball player and former coach of the Rustlers Women’s Volleyball team. 

As the athletics supervisor, Aaron is responsible for the day to day operations of the athletics program and is based on the Lloydminster Campus. 

Aaron and his wife Trish (also an LC alumnae) are the proud parents of two future Rustlers.

Peter Sambu re-joined the Lakeland College Athletics team as Head Men’s Basketball Coach for the 2010-11 season.  Peter Sambu brings with him varied experience from High School to Pro Basketball.  For the 2010 - 2011 season, Sambu led the Rustler men's basketball team to a 4th place conference finish with a rookie laden team.   This past summer Coach Sambu took on a head coaching role with the Edmonton Energy Basketball team who compete in the  International Basketball League.  He was able to lead them to a 2nd place finish in the league.

Prior to coming back to the ACAC, Coach Sambu went on to coach in the United States as an Assistant Coach for several Division I Junior College programs: Colby Community College (Colby, Kansas); Gary Steelhead (USBL-Gary, Indiana), North Dakota State College of Science (Wahpeton, North Dakota) and then most recently was an assistant coach at Lakeland College (Under the guidance of the CCAA’s All-Time Coach with the most Career Wins: Phil Allen). Most recently this past summer he was an
Assistant Coach with Paul Sir for the Edmonton Energy. (International Basketball League, who finished as the north division regular season champions)

Sambu served as Associate Coach for Lakeland College in Lloydminster, Alberta in 2004-05. There he worked under one of Canada's most successful basketball coaches, Phil Allen, who won 762 games in a coaching career spanning 34 years. Allen's win total stands as the highest in Canadian college basketball history.

Sambu was Head Coach at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta from 1997-2003. During his four years as Head Coach, Sambu's teams had a 104-51 record. His teams finished with an impressive 73% winning percentage, as well as one ACAC Championship, two ACAC Silver Medals, and one National Championship appearance.

Prior to that, Sambu served as an Assistant Coach at the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota. He also served as Head Coach for the Athletic Association Union there leading the North Dakota Black and Gold to a record 12-4.

Sambu brings both his experience and a creative, relational, fundamentally sound, intense, defence-first coaching philosophy, which will be a great fit for the Lakeland College team.  Coach Sambu is looking to achieve a well-rounded Men’s program based on a student/athlete concept of education first, athletics second. 

Lakeland College and the Rustler Athletics family would like to welcome Coach Peter Sambu back to the college and looks forward to competitive seasons ahead.

Women's Basketball Head Coach - Chris King

Chris is entering his 4th  year as Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball team. He previously served as an assistant with the Lady Rustlers and in the RTC South Basketball Canada Program. In 2003 Chris took his New Castle High (Australia) Boys team to the New South Wales State Semi Finals.

Chris spends a great deal of time running community basketball camps across western Canada, as well as coaching the Jr. Rustlers U-17 and U-15 programs. Chris played 2 years for the Lakeland College Rustlers and won an ACAC silver medal under former Men’s coach, Phil Allen. After Lakeland he transferred to  the University of Lethbridge to play for the Pronghorns. Due to growing up in Kitscoty, Alberta and playing for the Rustlers Chris has a personal connection with Lakelands Rustler Athletics and surely bleeds green and gold, he is looking forward to building the women’s program into a championship contender.

Daryl Ford is a certified level 3 volleyball coach who coached volleyball for 35 years in Manitoba at all levels from jr. high to Manitoba provincial team. This includes 34 years as head coach of the Glenboro Panthers high school men`s volleyball team. He  has been an assistant coach with the U of W Wesmen men`s team as well as an assistant with the 2005 Manitoba Canada Games men`s team. 

Daryl has been involved with the Manitoba Volleyball Association as a member of the board of directors and recently was the chair of the Grassroots Development Committee for that organization. He has also been involved with that organization`s Volleyball on the Road program taking instructional camps to rural communities.

Spring 2009 was a memorable time for him. In April, he won Coaching Manitoba`s Peter Dick award for High School Coach of the Year. He also was inducted into the Manitoba Volleyball Association`s Hall of Fame in the builder category.

Austin returned to the Rustlers in the 2010 - 2011 after filling a one year interim head coaching position with the University of Saskatchewan.  After spending five seasons with the Huskies as an assistant coach, Dyer accepted the head coach role with the Lakeland College Lady Rustlers in Lloydminister during the 2008-09 season. He immediately made an impact on the team leading them to a fifth place finish in the Albert Colleges Athletic Conference – the best in the College’s history.  He was awarded the ACAC North Coach of the Year award for his effort.  In the 2010 - 2011 season he lead the women's team to a 4th place finish in the conference.  Coach Dyer is very excited with the returning student athletes for the 2011 - 2012 season and the new recruits who will be attending Lakeland.
Dyer’s coaching experience also includes leading the Colonsay High School senior girls team and the WCVC Thunder to two provincial gold medals each. He was also the head coach for the Team Saskatchewan U17 and U18 teams, coached the Huskies United Club team for three years and ran the Storm Volleyball Club in Colonsay for three years.

Coach Kevin Wagner joined the Rustler Soccer Coaching staff as the Head Coach of the Soccer Program for both Male and Female teams in the spring of 2010.  The Rustlers inaugural season was one with many firsts.  The first victory for the men's team, the first tie for the women's program and an ACAC Gold Medal in Futsal for the men's program.   Kevin has been tasked with building a soccer program and his first year was definitely a step in the right direction.   “My beliefs are that while it will take more time  the key to Lakeland College in the ACAC will be to develop a Program rather than just a team”.  This includes working and developing proper programming for local youth players as well as including Alumni and Regional support for our program.

Kevin joins Lakeland College with an extensive Coaching background in soccer in Saskatchewan spanning 20 years.  Kevin has been a Provincial Coach for Saskatchewan Soccer Association since year 2000, been a member of the RTC coaching staff and represented Saskatchewan Soccer at the National Training Center Prairies (Edmonton) as a Coach over the past number of years. Kevin joins Lakeland College most recently as an Assistant Coach with the U of S Huskies Men’s Soccer Program and Head Coach of the Huskies United Youth Soccer Academy.

Some of Kevin’s success’ have been a Silver Medal at the most recent Western Canadian Summer Games team as Head Coach of the Saskatchewan U16 Male squad (07), as well as Coaching 4 teams to Club Nationals over the years in  various of age groups. These include Under 14 Male (05), Under 16 Male (07),  Under 18 Female(07) and Under 18 Female(08).  Kevin also comes with extensive experience Coaching High School athletes as Head Coach of Marion Graham High School boys squad in Saskatoon.

Kevin leads Lakeland College Soccer Program with the following Certification:

Canadian Soccer Association- National A License(part 2), National B License

United States Soccer Federation – National B License, National C License

National Soccer Coaches Association of America -  Advanced National Diploma, National Diploma

NCCP – Level 3

Kevin’s responsibilities also include Technical Director of Meridian Youth Soccer Association, and Rivers West District Coordinator for Saskatchewan Soccer Association.

Chris McQuid was a new addition to the Rustlers coaching staff for 2010/2011 and is looking forward to building on his experiences as an ACAC coach in his first season. 
Chris grew up on a farm South of Vermilion and began his curling career right here in Vermilion. Chris has curled competitively for over 15 years, including experience in the NACA Playdowns.

As Head Coach of the Rustlers curling teams, Chris is focused on developing other young curlers to help them reach their goals and to build on the past success of the Rustler's curling program.

Lyle is proud to become a member of the Lakeland College Coaching Staff . In the 2010 – 2011 season he assisted Michael Crowe with coaching Lakeland’s Cross Country team. Lyle is both a competitor and avid supporter of the sport of cross country and road racing. He has competed in over 150 races in both Canada and the USA and has experience in everything from 10 K road races to Ultra Marathons such as the Canadian Death Race in Grande Cache AB. He keeps up to date on the sport by attending information clinics and reviewing publications on the sport of running. Lyle holds a Level 1 Coaching Certificate and is looking forward to helping grow the Cross Country running program at Lakeland College.

MacMillan brings a tremendous amount of rodeo and equine experience.  He was born and raised north of Vermilion on a cattle and horse ranch, is an accomplished team roper, and worked in the oil patch in a management position prior to joining us. 

A graduate of Lakeland's crop technology program, he has been working with our rodeo club on and off for the last two years – mainly on a volunteer basis.

Here is a brief overview of Lee's duties:

  • management of equine events and facilities
  • rodeo club operation and coordination
  • equine and rodeo marketing, promotion and community liaison – in cooperation with the marketing and fund raising departments
  • horse facilities supervisor and manager

Peter helped establish the rowing program at Lakeland in 1996 and has been coaching the Rustler crews since then. Peter started his rowing career in 1976. His experience includes both club rowing and university rowing, and has completed part of the technical aspect for his level three coaching certification at the RCA national coaching conference.  Peter has shown his ability to work with the advanced rowers as well as assist novice rowers to develop a passion for the sport.
