Summer Camps
2011 Summer Camps a Success:
July was a busy month for the Rustlers as they hosted a number of junior and senior high volleyball and basketball athletes. Romel Raffin, who represented Canada in the Olympics as a member of the Men's National Basketball Team in the past, was back once again to put the young basketball players through their paces. The camp consisted of skill development, conditioning and team play. Although there was a wide range of ability at the camp each student left improved and a little sore.
The Rustler Junior High Volleyball Camp brought in Austin Dyer, Lakeland women's volleyball coach, who worked side by side with Nina Kruger Schwanke from Brazil. The pair worked on skill development with the campers stressing the importance of the basics of the game. The students in the camp also competed in some game play in the evenings working on team play and the skills that they had learned earlier in the day. Scaling the climbing wall and gettng an afternoon off to have some fun in the swimming pool were also opportunities that many of the young campers took advantage of during the week.
The Senior High Camp was at capacity this year with Nina Kruger Schwanke returning for a second week and being joined by Stephen Nash. Stephen was spending the summer back in Canada after playing for a professional team in Italy. Stephen also competed at the CCAA level and CIS before heading overseas. The senior high students also focused on the fundamentals of the game but spent more time on team play and strategy. By the end of the 5 day camp many of the students were feeling pretty tired but much improved as volleyball players.
Check back the beginning of February for camp dates for the summer of 2012.
