Truth and Reconciliation at Lakeland
Located in the heart of Treaty 6 Territory and Region 2 of the Métis Nation of Alberta, Lakeland College recognizes the critical importance of acknowledging Indigenous peoples’ values and beliefs.
Lakeland acknowledges Indigenous Peoples as the first people of Canada, honouring and respecting the history and roots of this nation.
The college has its own land acknowledgement, askīyiwimamīhcītotamowi, that was created by 3 members of the Indigenous Student Committee. It was unveiled on April 6, 2022.
The college provides pathways for Indigenous students, as well as on-campus supports and programs, and supports Truth and Reconciliation initiatives with community partners.
Among the college's actions was adding Treaty 6 and Métis Nation of Alberta flags on both its campuses.
The manager of Indigenous support services works with the college’s Indigenous Student Committee and organizes a variety of events and activities:
- Elder-in-residence program
- annual teepee raising
- pipe ceremonies
- Métis beading workshops
- Indigenous Awareness Day activities
- reconciliation speakers series
Lakeland also officially observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept 30.
