Opportunity
Study, work and immigration
Opportunity
Our country welcomes students from around the world.
To start, you'll need a study permit. While you're a full-time student, you may work either on or off campus.
If you decide you like Canada and want to stay, immigration is a possibility. Both Alberta and Saskatchewan, the provinces where our campuses are located, have immigration programs.

Work when you're a student
Current rules make it easy for anyone with a study permit to work on campus, off campus or if their program has a practicum or internship component. You can start a job the same time as you start your program. On campus jobs - You may work on campus if you are a full-time student with a study permit. But when the school year ends, you must get a work permit.
Off campus jobs - if you are a full-time student you qualify to work up to 20 hours per week off campus and full-time during scheduled breaks such as spring break, winter holidays and summer holidays.
In both cases, you will need to apply for a Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN). As well, as soon as your study permit is over, you must stop working.
Coop, practicum and intern positions - If your program requires a practicum, coop placement or internship, you will need to also apply for a work permit.
For more information on working while you study, go to Immigration Canada's work while you study page.
The post-graduation work permit allows international students to get Canadian work experience, and even helps them to qualify for permanent residence through the Canadian Experience Class.
Note: Stay in the know during the COVID-19 crisis by watching the Immigration Canada website. One of the latest notices is that if your in-class courses are being moved to an online-only format because of COVID-19, your eligibility for the PGWP program won’t be affected.
Immigration Programs
Because our province is located in two provinces, you could access either province's immigration programs.
- AlbertaCanada.com is a site about doing business in or moving to Alberta. The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program is a specific program of interest.
- Saskatchewan has a website about its immigration programs and services. Specifically, you might want to look at the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program.
You can learn more about immigration by using the Come To Canada tool.
Affordable
Tuition is your biggest expense, but it isn't the only one
Affordable
Lakeland is an affordable option.
Your college costs include tuition, books and supplies, additional fees and your living expenses.
Tuition
Tuition is the fee for your program. It's is the largest expense you’ll have as a student.
- Lakeland has a set flat international tuition rate for most programs. This means no matter the program you take, tuition will be the same.
- If the program’s tuition is above the flat rate, you’ll pay the larger amount.
Other fees and costs
- All students pay a students' association fee, program specific fees and comprehensive fee. All are set rates. These cover a variety of services and materials. Examples include:
- Books, supplies and field trip costs vary by program.
- All international students must have health insurance. This amount is included in your fee total.
The total of tuition plus other fees averages over $16,500 (Canadian).
Living Costs
Costs will vary depending on where you choose to live, check out our estimated living expenses.
Scholarships
Lakeland College has an excellent awards program. Some of these awards have residency requirements, while others do not. Usually international students don't qualify for entrance scholarships. You may qualify for other awards if you meet the selection criteria. Check out our awards database.
