Lacer the Racer Alumni Golf Bash
Your experience
This golf bash at the Vermilion Golf & Country Club is nine-holes followed by a steak dinner. You don't need to be a golfer. This event is all about fun and fellowship.
You can choose to golf or not.
The get-together typically continues at the Vermilion Fair.
About Lacer the Racer
After her untimely death in late 2010, her Lakeland family looked for a way to pay tribute to their friend, student and fellow athlete. The result was the Lacer the Racer Alumni Golf Bash, held at the same time as the Vermilion Fair.
Funds raised at the event go to the Lacey Longworth Memorial Award for Lakeland student-athletes. In particular, the award goes to members of the rowing crew.
Lacey came to Lakeland in 2006 from Harris, Sask., to study environmental sciences. She joined the rowing crew that first year. She went on to become the the team’s first four-year veteran. She completed her diploma in 2008 and then an applied degree in 2010.
Along the way, she was twice named winner of the Crew Award for leadership and team spirit. She was also an accomplished member of Lakeland's Judging Club as well as the Stockman's Club. She also served as a student ambassador.
She was known for her motto of "make good choices" as much as for her infectious smile and outgoing personality.
Lacey Longworth Memorial Award
The memorial award was established in 2012, after the first golf bash in 2011, by Longworth's family, friends and the rowing crew.
Ryan Lutz was the recipient of the first award. Since then, two awards have been given annually.
Criteria include the student returning to the rowing crew the next year as well as displaying some of Longworth's qualities:
- a commitment to the team and to the sport of rowing
- team leadership
- a desire to succeed
- ambitious
