Andrew (not his real name) was experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety before and during exams.
He was at high risk of failing and in significant academic trouble. Instructors referred him to Karen Harris, our learner success strategist. Together they explored his experiences in class and during exams.
During their session, Karen introduced him to poi balls. Poi balls are on the end of long string. You swing them in forward figure eight motions crossing the midline of your body. Andrew was able to achieve the highest routine level in under 10 minutes. Most individuals require 45 to 60 minutes, or longer to achieve that level.
She discovered Andrew’s skill was related to his experience as a competitive Indigenous powwow dancer. Her recommendation: Use dance to help relieve anxiety and stress.
So he did.
Dance came before both study sessions and exams. In just a few weeks, he made substantial progress including passing the semester.
