New Alberta government restrictions
On Dec 8, the Alberta government announced new COVID-19 restrictions.
Later this week, Advanced Education confirmed post-secondary institutions may start the winter semester as originally scheduled.
COVID-19 restrictions will remain a prevalent part of Lakeland's day-to-day. To reduce the risk of transmission of the virus, we will stagger student return to on-campus activities. Classes will start as scheduled. Our energy and foundational learning programs will begin on Monday, Jan. 4. The rest of our programs will start on Tuesday, Jan. 5
On-campus labs, lectures and other activities will resume throughout January. Students are being sent emails with the details for their program. All the information is also in the the January Class Schedule tile below.
President Alice Wainwright-Stewart has recommended no off-campus program activities be scheduled for January.
Additional COVID-19 restrictions on campus

Active COVID-19 cases as of Dec. 10
Yesterday we learned that two students at the Vermilion campus have COVID-19. The students were last on campus on Saturday, Dec. 5. The people who were in contact with these people have been notified and provided instructions.
There are currently 6 active cases at Lakeland:
- Vermilion campus: 1 employee, 3 students
- Lloydminster campus: 1 employee, 1 students
Holiday closure
Lakeland College will be closed from Dec 21 through Jan 3. The college will re-open on Jan 4, 2021.
Holiday cheer for students
Together with the Students' Association, Lakeland will share some holiday cheer with students who can't return home for the holidays due to COVID-19 restrictions. We will provide them with a holiday wellness package and invite them to participate in some online festive activities.

Two Lakeland employees – one at each campus – test positive for COVID-19- Vermilion campus: 1 employee, 1 student

- Per the Saskatchewan Health Authority everyone who uses the recreation facilities in Lloydminster must wear a non-medical mask during any activity.
- As noted previously, Lakeland Rustler team training was suspended on Nov. 27 until the new year.
- Family/Cohort swims are now family only swims.
- Aquafit classes are cancelled.
- Group fitness and cohort workouts are cancelled.
- All previously approved sport cohorts are suspended.
- Facility hours have been reduced.
Dec 3
- These cases are localized to a specific group of students, all of whom have been self-isolating since Sunday Nov. 29.
- Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and Lakeland’s Health Services department are doing the contact tracing.
- The risk of transmission of the virus outside of this group is considered low.
- An area specific response and cleaning plan is in place.
- To protect the privacy of these people, no more details will be released.

- in common indoor campus spaces such as hallways, washrooms, The Commons, cafeterias and bookstores. Face coverings are required even though you are alone.

- Lakeland's Vermilion Recreation Centre has its own guidelines regarding face coverings to comply with Alberta Health Services recommendations for wearing a mask during intense physical activity.
- In Lloydminster, the SHA is asking those who feel comfortable to wear a face covering during indoor exercise (update Dec 7 2020).
- Students living in a spinwheel or townhouse at the Lloydminster campus or a townhouse at the Vermilion campus aren’t required to wear a face covering while in their on-campus home. However, students who live in the large residence buildings at the Vermilion campus must wear a face covering while in public spaces of the residence and keep 2 metres distance from others. Note: Residence capacity has been reduced, students are placed where possible with people in the same program, and no visitors are allowed. Additional protocols are in place based on the style of housing
- Children going to our campus child care centres don't need to wear a face covering but adults dropping them off are required to wear a face covering while walking them to the centre.

Campus re-entry guide
- You'll do an online orientation to re-entry (see below for a copy). You'll complete the orientation. If you're a returning student, you may do it on D2L. If you're a new student and need to be on campus on registration day, complete the PowerPoint and confirmation using the e-document below.

Don't come on campus. Depending on your jurisdiction you’re required to be in isolation for 10 or 14 days from the start of symptoms or until symptoms resolve, whichever takes longer. A Lakeland incident investigation would already be in progress from the initial report of your illness.
- If you or a family member are being tested for or diagnosed with COVID-19, please inform your instrctor/ chair and Lakeland College’s health services team (healthservicesverm@lakelandcollege.ca).
- Inform your instructor/chair and/or the health services coordinator if you are at higher risk of severe illness, (ie chronic health conditions) and take appropriate precautions to limit your exposure.

I am working remotely,any tips?It’s normal to feel stressed in a time of uncertainty. If you’ve noticed an increase in anxiety, be kind to yourself. Lakeland’s counselling and wellness team’s services are available to students. Support is available in-person, online and by phone for students:

Preventing the virus from spreading
Influenza and other common viruses remain the most likely cause of a respiratory infection.- use good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing. See AHS hand washing instructions (pdf)
- cover coughs and sneezes
- avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hand. For example, after disposing a tissue, wash your hands.
- stay at home and away from others if you are feeling ill
- contact your primary health provider or Health Link 811 if you have questions or concerns about your health

How to prepare?
If you want to prepare you and your household if you have to self-isolate, Alberta public health officials recommendations are:- Talk with the people who need to be included in your plan.
- Meet with household members, other relatives, and friends to discuss what to do if a COVID-19 outbreak occurs in your community and what the needs of each person will be.
- Plan ways to care for those who might be at greater risk for serious complications. This includes practical steps like ensuring you have sufficient medication and determining what supplies are needed, and if they can be delivered.
- Talk with your neighbors about emergency planning.
- Create a list of local organizations that you and your household can contact in the event you need access to information, health care services, support, and resources.
- Create an emergency contact list.
- Practice everyday preventive actions, like those listed in the prevention section.
- Choose a room in your home that can be used to separate sick household members from those who are healthy. Identify a separate bathroom for the sick person to use, if possible. Plan to clean these rooms, as needed, when someone is sick.
- Learn about your employer’s emergency operations plan.
- Ask about what sick-leave policies and telework options are available if needed.

Gymnasium/ weight room
In light Government of Alberta restrictions and working to keep the transmission of COVID low we have made the following changes- We will not be allowing Cohorts to workout in the weight room and are reminding patrons of the requirements to social distance when you are in our facility.
- Spotting will not be allowed in the weight room for at least the next 3 weeks..
- Cohort bookings for the gymnasium will not be permitted unless it is for your immediate family.
- All group fitness class are canceled All previously approved sport cohorts are now suspended
Face covering required
Face coverings are now mandatory when you enter and exit the Lakeland College Recreation Centre.Still in effect: Cancellations, no shows and wait lists
With students on campus, there is a higher demand for bookings at the Vermilion Campus Recreation & Aquatic Centre.We've implemented new policies to maximize facility use: Our goal is to ensure that our facility is used as much as possible and to supply the best experience possible for our patrons
- We have added a wait list of 3 participants to all our bookings.Please add your name if you want to be notified if a spot becomes available.
- With wait lists, you are required to cancel any booking you can't use/attend
- Cancel at least 2 hours before your gym or pool booking. You may use either through WIX booking app or by calling 780 853 8402.
- If you don't cancel, you will be marked as a no show.
- If you are a no show 3 times, you'll have to be reinstated before you can make another booking.
- A $20 fee is required before you can book gym, weight room or pool time again. To pay the reinstatement fee, call the rec centre at 780 853 8402 to make a payment by credit card. You may call during business hours.
General procedures for staff and facility users
We all play a role in keeping our collective community safe, so you can expect changes to how our spaces look.Passes
- If you have a pass, it will reactivate the first day you return to the rec centre.
- All passes that haven't been reactivated before Sept 1.will be on that date
Entering the rec centre
- don't come to the recreation centre if you have:
- follow the directional signage and area floor markings
- arrive for your booking no more that 10 minutes before that time. This will minimize unnecessary gathering in the hallway
- new please scan your student ID or membership fob when you enter the building
- when you enter the facility, you’ll be asked to write down your name and phone number. This will be used for contact tracing and will only be retained for 14 days.

- you must stay 2 metres apart from others
- where possible, please pay with credit or debit
- face coverings aren't required (per AHS recommendations for physical activity)
Online bookings
- because there's reduced capacity, please book your time online.

- you are allowed one 60 minute booking per day. The booking system won't let you book more than that.
- because there's limited space, drop-ins are discouraged as a time slot might not be available
- gym bookings should also be made online. However, if you are booking for a family group, please call 780 853 8402 to book a time slot

Pool Protocol for Re-opening
All swim times must be booked online ahead of time, a maximum 3 days in advance. No drop ins at this time.- To book a time, go to lcrecreation.wixsite.com/lcrecreationcentre
- Follow the instructions to book your first swim time.
- Once your first session is booked you will receive an email invite to join the app
- Set up your account and continue booking from the app

Other pool protocols:
- Arrive no more than 10 minutes before your booking time. Please social distance and follow the arrows on the floor for direction
- Everyone must arrive with their swimsuit on under their clothes. There isn't access to change rooms on your way into the pool.
- Bring minimal personal belongings with you. There isn't access to lockers at this time.
- All pool patrons will enter thru the family change room entrance. You will be greeted by a lifeguard who will sign you in and give you a basket for your personal belongings and clothes.This basket will remain on deck close to your swim area.
- Two washrooms are available, if needed, in the family change room area.
- The on deck shower is the only available shower.A cleansing shower must be taken before entering pool.
- When finished your swim time, you'll gather your belongings from your basket, enter your respective change room, change as quickly as possible and exit out the change room.
- Masks must be removed before entering pool but can be worn in hallways and change rooms
- Goggles aren't available for rent but may be purchased at the front desk.
- Showers won't available after your swim time. For the time being, we ask you to have your cleansing shower when you return home.
- As directed by Alberta Health Services, the hot tub will remain closed
- A cohorts have been limited to a family in the same household (Nov 27, 2020)

- Facility hours changed Aug 10 for more user access. Those hours were reduced Nov 27 because of the COVID awareness level.

- You must pre-register for your move-in time. Slots are available between 9 am and 7 pm. If you've applied and paid your damage deposit, you'll receive a link to book your time.
- You are allowed up to 2 people to help you move-in. You must submit their names to your campus' residence office before your move-in day.
- In person payment won't be available on your move-in day. Please pay online using My Lakeland. Residence fees should be posted by Aug 4. New students will receive instructions to access My Lakeland before that date.
