Repaying your student loan
If you get a government student loan, then you’ll have to pay it back.
If thinking about loan payments makes you anxious or stressed, there is help. Here are some resources.
While you’re still in school
A good place to start for any student loan holder is Paying back Student Loans on the Student Aid - Canada website. You can:
- learn how government student loan repayment works
- get tips and tools for making your repayment plan
- use the loan repayment estimator
The National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC) offers regular webinars on the student loan repayment process. You’ll learn:
- how to save money
- how to avoid repayment difficulties
- how to maintain your student loan

If you have an Alberta student loan
Communication has gone digital.
Alberta Student Aid sends emails to students about student loan repayment. These emails are:
- sent monthly if you are entering repayment
- intended to provide you with an overview of information you need to know.
You will also need to register on the enhanced MyLoan website, so you can:
- customize your repayment plan
- send and receive messages in your account inbox
Already paying back your loan
