Transfer Guide
Our courses are evaluated through the provincial transfer systems.
Once approved, courses are added to the Alberta Transfer Guide.
There's even a transfer tool to check if the courses you plan to take, or have already taken, will transfer.
The Transfer Alberta website also has detailed information about transferring in Canada and internationally.
Transfer agreements
Transfer agreements match courses at one institution to courses at another institution. These formal agreements make transferring easier.
Lakeland College is a transfer college. We are the sending institution. This means Lakeland is responsible for negotiating agreements with the schools where students intend to transfer. These are receiving institutions.
A receiving institution decides whether or not it will accept the transfer course(s) from the sending institution.
When a formal agreement is made, it is generally recorded through the registrar's office at both institutions. If the schools are both in Alberta, the agreement is recorded in the official provincial guide.
If you encounter problems with transferring credits, we can help. Bring all your documentation and contact names from the receiving institution to your academic advisor or the Lakeland's registrar's office (in student services).
Transfer terminology
There are a lot of terms associated with transferring to another institution. If you are unsure of any terms you come across, such as residency requirements, please check our transfer glossary.
Alberta transfer agreements
In Alberta, formal transfer agreements are recorded in the annual Alberta Transfer Guide or Transfer Alberta.
If it's not in the Alberta Transfer Guide, you are responsible for contacting your receiving institution to see if your Lakeland courses will transfer.
Check the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina websites for information about transferring your credits.
Transferring outside of Alberta & Saskatchewan
Canada doesn't have a nation-wide transfer system.
However, Lakeland students have transferred successfully to universities in other provinces as well as the United States.
There are transfer guides in other parts of Canada.
- British Columbia - the BC Transfer Guide
- Newfoundland - Memorial University Transfer Credit
- Ontario - ONTransfer
Most universities and colleges have a transfer credit section on their website. You may also start there.
We recommend you contact the receiving institution early in the process. Early may mean before you actually start classes at Lakeland. It can be a time-consuming process. You may also need to supply course outlines as well as sample assignments and exams. Your academic advisor can help.
You need to know
- There is no guarantee courses will transfer.
- The final decision about whether your course(s) will transfer is at the discretion of the receiving institution.
- What will transfer won't be confirmed until after you apply and submit your final, official Lakeland transcript.
