Lakeland College is celebrating the success of its interior design technology program and students. Not only was Lakeland named the 2019 College of the Year by the National Kitchen & Bath Association, but the college's interior design technology program was also recognized with a 2019 Excellence in Education award. Lakeland’s winning-streak continued in the Student Design Competition too, marking 16 consecutive years of student award winners.

Feast on the Farm 2019 celebrates student leadership

Feast on the Farm
More than 200 people enjoyed an evening outdoors in support of student leadership at Lakeland’s Feast on the Farm on Aug. 15. The Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland’s (SMF) 30th anniversary celebration was also kicked off at Feast on the Farm. A special video presentation highlighting the history and innovation of the SMF was shared.

Searching for sky rocks

Using data from a University of Alberta camera at Lakeland's Research Centre, triangulated with an image from a photographer who happened to be photographing the northern lights, scientists verified with almost pinpoint accuracy the trajectory of the fireball that lit up the skies on Aug. 31.

Federal funds help Lakeland and partners advance ag tech

Lakeland is one of eight organizations that will advance national agriculture technology priorities thanks to new funding for the Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network.

Grant funding boosts livestock and agronomic research

SmartFeed-Pro Systems
Lakeland’s applied research in feed efficiency and livestock supplementation was strengthened with the purchase of new SmartFeed-Pro (SFP) systems, thanks to new federal funding. As a recipient of the Applied Research Tools and Instruments Grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) College and Community Innovation program, Lakeland purchased six units of the SFP systems.
Thanks to an additional NSERC grant, Lakeland will purchase a specialized research combine to help build capacity and further serve the crop industry, as well as producers’ needs for small-plot agronomic research in the region.

Students in the lead

CBSA Cheque
Students involved in the commercial beef unit of the Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland received a cheque in March after an animal they sold was processed through certified sustainable operations of the beef supply chain. That triggered Lakeland’s first payment through the Canadian Beef Sustainability Acceleration Pilot. Since then, Lakeland has received a second cheque covering animals processed in June of 2019.

Global learning opportunity

University transfer Mexico trip
Sixteen university transfer students took their lesson plans to Mexico on an educational mission trip in the spring. They travelled to Ensenada for a once-in-a-lifetime teaching opportunity where they introduced local children to Canadian culture.

Enviro Club sets new record

Enviro Club
Fundraising efforts by Lakeland’s Enviro Club supported multiple conservation initiatives, making it one of the most substantial donations in the club’s history.

Alumni spotlight

Top Apprentice
Parts technician Alicia Harris-Kopeck, Class of 2018, was honoured with a 2018 Top Apprentice Award at the 22nd annual Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Awards of Excellence .

Grad excels on health care front line 

As a 2019 health care aide graduate, Val Hoveland’s skills are in action at the Bea Fisher Centre in Lloydminster, where she’s working with individuals with physical and mental disabilities.

Instructor shines light on British home children

British Home Children
2019 marks 150 years since the first group of British home children arrived on Canadian shores. Lakeland instructor Susan Brazeau is speaking with students to make them aware of this part of Canada’s history.
