The new Animal Health Clinic allowed Lakeland to double enrolment in the animal health technology and veterinary medical assistant programs.

Students learn and practice clinical skills in an animal hospital setting. In student-led clinic, they also sell products to students and staff.

The clinic features:

  • increased lab spaces - there are 3
  • separate cat and dog wards
  • a dental lab (photo at right)
  • modern surgical suite
  • more exam and treatment rooms
  • separate pharmacy
  • expanded equine intake area as well as stocks and stalls
  • reception and retail space

 Project history

Total cost of the clinic was over $8 million
  • Lakeland received $2,487,500 in federal funding for the clinic through the Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund.
  • $1.76 million grant from the Government of Alberta
  • $1.12 million through our Access to the Future grant
  • Another $1 million was raised through Leading. Learning. The Lakeland Campaign.
Besides the enlarged space and specialized equipment, the design includes many energy efficiency elements including increased R value in the walls and ceiling insulation as well as VFD controlled motors, walk-in freezer and fridge versus 10 chest freezers, and LED lighting.

There is also medical oxygen distributed through the facility to reduce the use of loose bottles, and ceiling overhead columns for power and medical gas. Each space that has medical gas has pressure monitoring to inform when pressure is low, then the overall main distribution is monitored and automatically switches over the reserve tanks and sends a message to replace the other set so no interruptions due to lack of gas.

Lakeland and University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) signed a five-year coordination agreement to develop more learning and research opportunities for students and faculty at both post-secondary institutions.
 Official Opening

 Specialized equipment
Over $1.3 million in specialized equipment is available for student use. This includes:
  • Feline and canine SynDaver models: Lakeland is the first organization in the world to use SynDaver’s CopyCat synthetic feline cadaver for training, and the first in Alberta to use the synthetic canine cadaver
  • Lumens document cameras: These cameras display live demonstrations and activities on televisions throughout the facility
  • A bovine ultrasound machine with BCF universal goggles
  • A direct digital radiography x-ray system
  • Realistic equine model
