Award-winning choice for IDT grad
Brea Holt, Class of 2022 interior design technology, is Lakeland’s latest National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Student Competition winner.
Her beach-inspired kitchen design captured the judges’ attention for its uniqueness, earning her second place in the international competition.
“Since the college is recognized and our instructors have supported previous students with their submissions, I had confidence because they know how the competition works and its expectations. I took all their advice, and it paid off,” she says.
"The home was located on a beach, so I pulled inspiration from the surroundings; driftwood, the sand and sky, all the natural elements to create a calming outdoor environment indoors,” says Holt.
The dedication she put into her design, and the support from her instructors gave her assurance when she submitted her design to the competition. Holt also credits this to Lakeland’s accreditation and relationship with the NKBA.
Interior design has always been a passion for Holt, striving to design spaces that make people feel welcomed and at home. She also loves a functional area that can serve many people. She felt her passion and drive aligned with what Lakeland offered. “I know that Lakeland is a very established college, especially with the interior design program. They are recognized for winning awards; which says a lot about the program.”
During the program, IDT students are assigned a project that involves designing a business. Holt reflected on the opportunity, enjoying the design classes as well as the business branding and marketing lessons.
“In our second semester, we get an in-depth lesson in commercial design. We got into branding, which I think for designers is important. We learned to go beyond our floor plans and materials by designing marketing materials like posters and brochures. We can offer a service to a business that truly aligns with them.”
Holt took her education to Saskatoon’s Hometown Homes for her practicum placement and then used that experience to secure full-time employment with Redl World Class Kitchens in Saskatoon as a cabinetry designer.
“It was easy for me to find a job, and I think it’s because designers recognize Lakeland. They know the standards set for us during the program. Lakeland has established a reputation for award-winning designers.”
