The 2021 Conference on Environmental Management will be presented virtually in March.

The third annual event will feature Lakeland College’s bachelor of applied science: environmental management (BASEM) student capstone presentations, with topics ranging from species protection to water quality monitoring, vegetation recovery, land water interactions and technology in the environment.

“Connecting our students with industry professionals is a huge advantage of our environmental sciences program and our conference is a big part of that,” says Geoff Brown, Lakeland’s dean of environmental sciences.

“It was incredibly important to us that we found a way to continue to offer our students this opportunity for connection in a way that follows all health and safety protocols currently in place. Though a virtual event will be a different experience for our students, it is still an excellent way for them to share their hard work with their practicum partners and our industry guests.”

At the end of the conference, two students will be presented with awards recognizing the quality of their work.

Capstone presentations are completed in partnership with host agencies while BASEM students are on practicum. This year’s host agencies include:

  • Ducks Unlimited

  • Environment Canada and Climate Change – Canadian Wildlife Service

  • Golder

  • The Métis Nation of Alberta

  • Parks Canada

  • Piperino Land Services

  • Ram River Environmental

  • Summit

  • Teck Resources

  • Thorhild County

  • Woodlands North

“Every year, we are so grateful to our industry partners who host our BASEM students and make our program a huge success,” says Dr. Nicole Nadorozny, Lakeland College environmental sciences practicum coordinator and instructor. “Practicums are a critical aspect of ensuring our students graduate with the hands-on skills and experience they need to excel in the workplace.”

The conference will take place in the afternoons over three days – March 16, 18 and 25, from 1 to 3:15 pm, with free cost of admission. Due to limited capacity, registration is required, and attendees can register for whichever days work best for their schedule.

This year’s Conference on Environmental Management is sponsored by Bill Bocock, ECO Canada, Matrix Solutions Inc., Ridgeline Canada Inc. and Trace Associates.
