Esthetician student excels

At Lakeland College, Daphney Couturier is taking the lead in the student-managed spa at the Lloydminster campus. The esthetician student is now well on her way to completing the one-year program.
“It’s a great environment to work in,” says Couturier, who is also a hairstylist by trade. “People are happy and excited to see you when they come to the spa, you get to know your clientele and they become your friends. It’s a fun atmosphere.”
Couturier’s passion for health and wellness led her to enrol in Lakeland’s program. She’s excelling in the student-run spa working with real clients by completing specialized skin and body treatments, hot rock massages, manicures and more.
“They walk you through everything at Lakeland to make sure you are comfortable and confident providing the procedures properly,” says Couturier, who also works at a hair salon, Glow Hair and Body, in Irma, Alta. “In the campus spa, they give you time to work with each client so nothing is rushed and you’re able to concentrate on providing the best service you can to your client.
“You have to learn how to multi-task too in the spa, to have a conversation and complete your procedures,” she adds with a laugh.
By completing more than 150 hours of hands-on work in the spa, Couturier says she’s not only gaining valuable experience, but it confirms she’s on the right career path. Following convocation, Couturier plans on offering a range of esthetician services at Glow Hair and Body.
“Being in school makes me realize this is what I want to be doing. I really like the industry and how we can make people feel. You can make someone’s day by pampering them with these services and that’s a great feeling.”
