From the president's desk: December 20, 2023

Hello everyone and happy holidays.
In 2023, Lakeland featured numerous remarkable achievements and milestones that captured our commitment to excellence and innovation. Here are some key highlights from the year I would like to share with you.
Milestone Celebration
On November 17, we celebrated our 110th anniversary. Beginning as the Vermilion School of Agriculture in 1913, hands-on learning was how we started and hands-on learning continues to this day.
Land Acquisition and Bison HomecomingThe Lakeland College's bison herd was welcomed to their new home in 2023. The newly purchased land comprises eight contiguous quarters, handling facilities, outbuildings, fencing, and complete services. The purchase increased our approach to demonstrating a commercial-scale mixed-farm operation as part of the Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF) and supporting our new bison operation. It was made possible by a historic $4 million donation in 2020 from Armin and Rita Mueller, specifically for that purpose.
Bentley Building Revitalization
The Bentley Building, built in 1969, houses Lakeland's award-winning interior design program and our human services programs. As 2024 progresses, this building will undergo a significant revitalization. The government of Alberta provided $13.3 million for the Bentley Building project. An additional $2.7 million has been allocated for other capital maintenance and renewal projects, promising a modernized learning environment for future generations.
Student Excellence and InnovationTyler Bendfeld, a skilled carpentry apprentice, secured gold at both Skills Canada and Skills Alberta competitions, showcasing his exceptional talent and dedication.
The interior design program received recognition for its outstanding contributions, being honored with the Excellence in Education award from the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Notably, students Tiarra Dyck and Hannah Tataryn excelled by clinching first and second place in the student kitchen design competition.
Our bachelor of agriculture technology students organized the inaugural Farm 4.0, the conference and tradeshow that brought together students, alumni, the community, and industry professionals. This event served as a platform to explore and showcase the cutting-edge advancements shaping the future of agriculture.
During the summer of 2023, Lakeland College's emergency technology students played a vital role in addressing the provincial wildfire situation. This marked a significant milestone as it was the first time fire students were deployed in such a manner, exemplifying the institution's commitment to hands-on learning and real-world applications of skills. This endeavor is another testament to Lakeland College's dedication to providing practical and experiential education.
Academic Opportunities and Enrolment Numbers
Lakeland College has expanded academic opportunities in various fields. Nursing students can complete their University of Saskatchewan Bachelor of Nursing degree at Lakeland's Lloydminster campus. In addition, sustainable energy technology students can further their education at NAIT through a recently established transfer agreement. Fall enrolment was up almost 12% over the same time last year. There were 2600 students in credit programs as of the end of September. We expect by the time the academic year is done, we will serve more than 6,000 credit and non-credit students.
Accolades and Recognition
Lakeland College has been recognized as one of Alberta's Top 75 Employers for seven consecutive years, showcasing its commitment to providing an exceptional workplace environment. Additionally, the institution earned a place among Canada's top 50 research colleges, highlighting its dedication to research excellence, as acknowledged by Research InfoSource Inc. Lakeland also received the Diversity Award from the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce.
Community Engagement and SupportFeast on the Farm, presented by Cenovus Energy, raised $90,000 to support student-led learning. Northlands launched a legacy student award with the $145,000 surplus left over as they wrapped up operations. Cenovus Energy also invested $650,000 in Indigenous student success programs at Lakeland.
I want to thank the Lakeland College community for their continuous support in 2023 and I look forward to a successful and productive 2024. Warmest wishes to you and your family for a safe and happy holiday season.
Until next time,
Alice
