From the president's desk: November 22, 2023

Hello everyone,
On November 17, 1913, a momentous occasion unfolded in Vermilion, Alberta, as citizens gathered to celebrate the official opening of a brand new college building – the Vermilion School of Agriculture. This historic event marked the birth of what would later become Lakeland College, an institution deeply rooted in its community and dedicated to providing hands-on education. In this article, we delve into the history of Lakeland College and its enduring commitment to excellence.
In 1928, as Lakeland College was taking its initial steps as a hub of learning and innovation, the decision was made to seek out a motto that would capture the spirit of our institution. The Motto Contest was an opportunity for our early staff and students to contribute their ideas and insights into what would define us for generations to come. After careful consideration, a student's entry of "Ever to Excel" emerged as the contest winner.
Lakeland College's history is a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence, its deep ties to the community, and its dedication to providing practical education. Lakeland College has etched a niche in the Canadian educational landscape, from its humble beginnings as the Vermilion School of Agriculture to its current status as a comprehensive institution offering diverse programs. As it continues to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of society and industry, Lakeland College remains a shining example of what can be achieved through determination, resilience, and a commitment to “Ever to Excel”. Over the years, "Ever to Excel" has become more than just a motto. It is a guiding principle that has shaped our culture, influenced our actions, and inspired us to go above and beyond. It is a call to embrace challenges and continually strive for greatness; qualities that have propelled Lakeland College into the remarkable institution it is today. With a rich history dating back over a century, Lakeland College has grown and evolved, weathering numerous challenges and name changes yet staying true to its motto, "Ever to Excel."
Throughout its history, Lakeland College has faced various challenges. It weathered the storm of the flu epidemic in 1918, navigated the turbulent economic waters of the late 1920s and the Great Depression, and continued to serve its purpose during World War II. These challenges tested the college's resilience and underscored its importance as a pillar of education in the region.
Over the years, the institution underwent several name changes, reflecting its evolving mission and scope:
- Vermilion School of Agriculture
- Vermilion Agricultural and Vocational College (1963)
- Vermilion College (1970)
- Lakeland College (1975)
From the very beginning, Lakeland College has been synonymous with hands-on education. The institution's commitment to experiential learning set the stage for its continued accomplishments. This emphasis on practical learning has contributed to the success of its graduates, who enter the workforce with a strong foundation of real-world skills.
As we celebrate this anniversary in the remarkable journey of Lakeland College, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Lakeland community. Your time, dedication, and commitment have played an integral role in the success and longevity of Lakeland College.
Until next time,
Alice
