New graduate credits Lakeland for mind-blowing opportunities

When new environmental sciences diploma graduate Nathaniel Hak toured Lakeland College with his Lakeland alumnus dad, he quickly realized he had found the right school.

“I was instantly hooked by the idea that I could complete my program outdoors, and that my education did not have to be defined by a classroom,” Hak explains. “The wildlife and fisheries conservation major has allowed me to gain experience in my field that directly translates to the real world. It has been awesome to take what I’ve learned in the outdoor labs and apply those concepts to my career.”

While at the college, he immersed himself in Lakeland life, serving as president of the Outdoor Recreation Club and treasurer of the Environmental Club.

Hak also managed an official Lakeland Instagram account for the environmental sciences department, where he interacted with classmates and teachers to showcase his program and the school. He represented his fellow students as a member on the Board of Governors as well.

“It’s mind-blowing what Lakeland has offered me,” says Hak. “Coming from high school during COVID-19 and having a shy personality, I never saw myself in positions like this. Lakeland afforded me the possibility to push myself. The opportunities I’ve had for leadership, extra-curriculars, and education have been amazing.”

For Hak, the chance to connect with industry through Lakeland has also been a highlight.

“I enjoyed the Alberta Chapter of the Wildlife Society conference we attended in March, as well as the Jasper trip we went on with the Outdoor Recreation Club,” Hak says. “The fact that I even got to go is so great.”

This summer, Hak is working for Nature Saskatchewan in his hometown of Regina, Sask., where the conservation skills he acquired at Lakeland will be of great use. In the fall, Hak looks forward to transferring to the University of Regina, where he will complete his bachelor of science in environmental biology.

Hak is the 2022/23 Vermilion campus recipient of the President’s Medal, the highest honour given by Lakeland College, awarded to students who display excellence inside and outside the classroom.

“I am incredibly grateful to receive this award, and I am deeply honoured that my instructors and peers have placed their trust in me as a member of the Lakeland community. It is absolutely a pinch-me moment,” says Hak.
