Students at the Lakeland College Emergency Training Centre now have access to a specialized industrial pumper fire truck.

Thanks to the generosity and support of NOVA Chemicals, Lakeland is the proud owner of this 2000 fire truck which will be used for industrial training. Measuring 36-feet in length, the vehicle has a 1,000-gallon foam tank capacity, Williams Hot Shot foam system and a 2,000 gallon per minute deck gun, among other features.

“We are truly grateful for NOVA Chemicals’ support. As Lakeland’s first industrial pumper, this is a welcome addition to our fleet. It’s a very big asset to the Emergency Training Centre that will allow our team to enhance the industrial fire training we offer,” says Kirk McInroy, manager of technical services.

The new industrial fire truck brings Lakeland’s fire fleet total to 16, including fire, aerial and rescue vehicles. Lakeland and NOVA Chemicals have a long-standing relationship. For more than 20 years, NOVA Chemicals has completed industrial fire training with Lakeland.

“Lakeland College is a valued fire training service provider for our NOVA Chemicals site personnel and we have enjoyed a long-term relationship with the college,” says Christian Lamoureux, emergency response coordinator at NOVA Chemicals Joffre Site. “There is a lot more life left in this pumper truck. We are pleased to re-purpose this vehicle and positively impact students in the firefighter training and emergency services technology programs. This equipment donation will give the students exposure to a larger industrial emergency response vehicle and is a tangible demonstration of NOVA Chemicals responsible approach to support emergency response preparedness in Alberta.”

The donated fire truck will be used for live industrial scenario training, including skills maintenance courses and fire fundamentals, by a wide range of students and clients.

“This industrial truck will make everybody’s training more effective and more in line with what they are going to use in a real situation,” says McInroy. “We thank NOVA Chemicals for their partnership and this incredible donation, which will benefit all of our industrial clients and students.”

Based at the Vermilion campus in eastern Alberta, Lakeland’s Emergency Training Centre prepares firefighters and other emergency personnel to respond to all emergency events under all conditions. Core courses in firefighting and customized programs for client groups are available. Lakeland serves more than 1,500 industrial contract students per year. Lakeland offers hands-on practical training with the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art training grounds in Canada.
