Client-hosted ETC courses

Host an ETC course at your department through our client-hosted program.

As a host you are responsible for scheduling the course as well as providing qualified instructors and evaluators/proctors.

Steps

Select the course (see next dropdown)
Check the personal protective equipment and facility requirements.
Find out if your students have the necessary prerequistes.
Budget for course fees and other costs.
Complete the Application to Host a Course form (interactive PDF). Note: Make sure you fill out the form completely. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
Plan course delivery including the instructor, evaluator and proctor. Purchase any required textbooks.
Mail, email or fax the application. The mailing address is on the form. Email dlearnfire@lakelandcollege.ca, or fax it to 780 853 4348.

Then, the course is delivered at your site. This includes practical evaluation and any exams.

Approved site requirements

Host departments have to ensure that they have an approved site and/or the required equipment to host courses.

Courses that require an approved site and/or required equipment are:

NFPA 1001 - Structural Firefighting (FFTS-S700)
NFPA 1001 - Hazardous Materials Fires (FFTS-S800)
NFPA 1001 - Firefighter Level I/II
NFPA 1002 - Fire Department Vehicle Driver/Operator
NFPA 1006 - Rescue Awareness (NFPA 1006 Ch. 5)
NFPA 1006 - Rope Rescue Level I/II
NFPA 1006 - Confined Space Rescue Level I/II
NFPA 1140 - Wildland Fire Fighting
NFPA 1072 - Dangerous Good Awareness, Operations and Technician Levels
NFPA 1081 - Industrial Fire Brigade Incipient, Advanced Exterior and Interior Structural Levels

Course fees

Client-hosted course fees are $140/student (minimum 5 students).

Exceptions are:

NFPA 1006 Rescue Awareness $245 + $100 per course guide
All other NFPA 1006 rescue courses $245
NFPA 1140 Wildland Firefighting $250/student
NFPA 1072 Dangerous Good Technician and Dangerous Goods Incident Commander $415/student
NFPA 1081 Incipient Fire Brigade Member $255/student
NFPA 1081 Advanced Exterior Fire Brigade Member $475/student
NFPA 1081 Interior Structural Fire Brigade Member $475/student
NFPA 1081 Facility Fire Brigade Leader $245/student

If a client-hosted course is cancelled by the host department after materials are sent, a cancellation fee will be charged.

Proctors and evaluators

You may need both an evaluator and a proctor for your client-hosted course.

If your course has a practical component, you'll need an evaluator.

If your correspondence course has a written examination, you'll need a proctor. A proctor supervises the exam.

Your proctor must:

Be approved by ETC
Be someone of good standing in the community. Some examples are fire chief, minister, teacher, librarian, professor, commissioner for oaths or similar office holder.
Not be associated with your training or instructing your course. Your instructor(s) can't be your proctor or evaluator.
Sign applicable agreements acknowledging their intention to comply with the testing procedures and regulations. For more details see the proctoring agreement and exam procedures form.
Not have any personal or familial (birth or marriage) relationship with the course instructor or students.

Some proctors and evaluators charge a fee for their service. This is especially true if you use an exam writing centre. Check with your proctor and/or evaluator. It's your responsibility to pay these fees.

Note: Courses with practical components require practical evaluations by an approved evaluator. See the Evaluator Procedures and Agreement form.

Exceptions are NFPA 1001 and NFPA 1021 series courses (QETC 101 for example) where the instructor may proctor exams and no separate evaluator is required. Proctors/Evaluators are required when completing a full level.
