Our unique, online petroleum management certificate combines leadership and management skills. Its starting point is your own experience.

Likely you currently work in gas/oil field or plant operations, maintenance and services. Or, in pipeline or other petroleum construction.

Whatever your current role, this program builds both your knowledge and skills. Your training means you can work safely and effectively in a management role. And, you’ll develop leadership tools so you can excel in your career and your company.

Admission requirements

You must meet one of the following three options to be eligible for admission:

A minimum of 6 months of industry experience (submit resume to energy.coned@lakelandcollege.ca)
Completion of one of these credentials:
- Power Engineering Technician (formerly Heavy Oil Operations Technician)
- Process and Power Engineering (formerly Heavy Oil Power Engineering)
- 4th, 3rd, 2nd, or 1st Class Power Engineering certification from an approved school in Canada
- Gas Process Operator (GPO)
- Production Field Operator (PFO)
- Journeyperson ticket in a trade
- Petroleum Operator Technician
- Wellsite Supervisor
- Fired Process Heater Operator
An approved competency of training through Keyera's Competency Management Development System (CMDS) with Petroleum Training Certificate by Lakeland College

Courses

There are 10 courses in the Petroleum Management Certificate.

Once you successfully complete all 10 courses, you are eligible to apply for a Lakeland College certificate.

Courses are online using Lakeland College's learning management system Desire to Learn (D2L).

QPIM 200 Management Practices

This course covers the most current business techniques to assist supervisors and managers in fulfilling business objectives, current management issues and challenges faced in day to day work, particularly when working in an operational environment within oil and gas. You'll explore and define best practices in managing for success within the current work environment, including the guiding of effective work groups focused on production and the bottom line, while ensuring compliance within legislative requirements and respect for the dignity of the individual. Pre/co-requisites: None

QPIM 201 Process Optimization

This course develops knowledge and skills needed for field personnel to optimize the performance, cost and results of their perspective facilities in the course of normal operations. Identifying the key areas to monitor and change will result in quicker response time, improved volumes, reduced expenses and a better bottom line. Pre/co-requisites: None

QPIM 202 Petroleum Industry Safety

This course provides the front line supervisor of a petroleum facility with the background to understand the components of a company's safety management system and the importance of ensuring that each site has a Safe Management Program. Learn about regulatory requirements as well as what causes incidents and how intervention before an incident can be optimized. Pre/co-requisites: None

QPIM 203 Employment Relations

This course will provide learners with a basic introduction to the functions of human resources management with a focus on the Canadian labour relations context, along with an overview of topics including managing in a unionized environment, leveraging diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, and successfully managing performance for organizational efficiency and effectiveness. Pre/co-requisites: None

QPIM 204 Leadership

This course provides an overview of contemporary thought on leadership, and the leader's role within the context of the oil and gas sector. You'll apply current leadership theory to the daily leadership challenges encountered in the workplace. Pre/co-requisites: None

QPIM 205 Emergency Response Planning

This course covers the fundamentals of emergency response management as it pertains to the oil and gas industry. A management perspective on response philosophies, provincial and federal regulatory requirements and key response activities of emergency responders is provided. Pre/co-requisites: None

QPIM 206 Environmental Stewardship

This course is designed to ensure that as a supervisor you have the necessary information to understand responsible industry development and legislative requirements for the environmental protection of air, land, water and wildlife. Topics include processes and procedures that companies must follow to ensure that legislative requirements are being met and costs are being minimized as a result of company activity and its impact on the environment. Pre/co-requisites: None

QPIM 207 Plant Turnaround

This course covers development of knowledge and skills needed for Field Supervisors to develop shutdown plans that are efficient, economical, safe, of high quality and meet the needs of all the stakeholders. It provides them with the skills to plan and manage the scope, schedule and cost of the turnaround activities. Pre/co-requisites: None

QPIM 208 Regulatory Compliance

A field or facility manager needs to know the legal and regulatory requirements related to petroleum production, processing and transportation requirements. Particular focus is on regulations, codes and guidelines as established by provincial regulatory bodies. Pre/co-requisites: None

QPIM 209 Financial Accounting

This course provides field supervisors and managers with the fundamentals needed to understand the principles that guide a company in its financial dealings and how data is collected and analyzed to facilitate this process. Emphasis is placed on the application of financial accounting principles and procedures within the oil and gas operations. Pre/co-requisites: None

We'll send you an email confirming we've received your documents and approval of your pre-requisite requirements. This can take up to 10 business days.

Lakeland College Continuing Education reserves the right to cancel courses. You can take one or more courses and complete all 10 courses to be eligible for the Petroleum Management Certificate. Efforts will be made to offer each of the 10 courses each calendar year; however, due to scheduling, all courses may not be available each year. Courses that are currently open for registration will appear on the registration platform. You are encouraged to monitor the platform for course opportunities as course schedules will be posted there.
