Certify your expertise as a wellsite supervisor.

Working with industry, Lakeland College developed this online program to evaluate and validate wellsite supervisor competencies.

Choose from either the drilling supervisor or completions supervisor certificates. This competency-based program is a 3-step process:

  • optional knowledge review and self-assessment -- a review of the competencies
  • quizzes -- timed, 90% required to pass
  • on-site assessment by a regional validator

Coursework, including review and quizzes will be completed online. After you complete the online quizzes, you'll notify Lakeland of online completion and request an on-site validation. You'll have 6 months to complete the online portion.

A certification of completion will be issued after successful completion of online competencies and on-site validation.

Program Requirements

One of the following:

  • at least 5 years of direct experience as a well site supervisor or
  • minimum of 1 year (250 on-site working days) as a well site supervisor, with 9 additional years of oilfield experience

Leadership and business experience

We'll need:

  1. Resume indicating your work experience
  2. Reference letter from an employer (current or previous) confirming your well site supervisor experience, as well as leadership and business roles.

Note: A master validator must sign off on your work experience.

If you need more information on these requirements, please contact us at wellsitesupervisor@lakelandcollege.ca, or contact the program coordinator, Michelle Armstrong.

  • Fees are subject to change
Validation fee

To reserve your on-site validation time with a regional validator, the minimum fee is *$1795. * fees are subject to change.

You don't pay this fee until the on-site visit has been scheduled. The minimum fee must be paid up front or a sponsorship letter must be submitted at least 10 business days prior to the scheduled onsite validation.

Once the regional validator has conducted the on-site validation, you will be notified of additional expenses. Additional expenses may also be incurred if travel beyond a 24-hour period is required to reach the on-site validation destination or for validator staff wait time.

You pay all the fees required for the validator to complete the on-site validation not limited to but including: travel expenses (mileage, airfare, accommodations, meals, car rental etc.) and validator wait time (daily rate) and expenses, etc.

Annual fee - currently not required

One of the goals of this program is baseline competency in the industry. This system requires upkeep.

In particular:

  • to stay up-to-date with industry recommended practices and regulatory requirements
  • for certificate holders to maintain and enhance their skills and knowledge

If you have a certificate, you are responsible for keeping it current in the system. This is similar to other occupations with annual certification or licensing feeds. It also means industry can rely on certified well site supervisors to have the necessary sills and knowledge.

You'll receive an email before your certification expires. This includes renewal instructions. It may also include a new requirement to keep your certification current. If you do not renew, you will forfeit your current certification.

FAQs
Why a competency program?

Industry identified a need to both evaluate and validate well site supervisor competencies.

The objectives were to:

  • improve safety and quality of on-site work
  • provide a consistent, industry-wide, easy-to-access process that also promotes continuous learning
  • provide a baseline industry competency

Industry experts working with Lakeland College developed a program that would not only assess but would also validate well site supervisor competency.

Well site supervisor competencies include:

  • leadership, personal and business skills
  • health, safety and environmental skills
  • drilling operations/completion and well servicing operations
How do I apply/register?

Applications can be completed online or by contacting the Registration Clerk at 780.871.5712.

Applicants should review the program requirements prior to program registration.

Following registration, applicants are required to submit the following documents by email.

1. Resume

2. Reference letter

These documents should be submitted to wellsitesupervisor@lakelandcollege.ca

Following review of your documents, you will receive an email with program approval and instructions to access the online content.  Note: It can take up to 10 business days to process applications and obtain content access.

What is a master validator?
A master validator is the person with many years of well site supervisory experience, employed by the college to review the resume and reference letter of the application. They make sure that the applicant has sufficient experience to pursue this certification of completion. Donna Macdonald is the master validator and will coordinate your access and on-site validation.
What is a regional validator?
The regional validator is the person who will perform your on-site validation. A regional validator has many years of well site supervisory experience. The regional validator will assess your competency as a well site supervisor during scheduled on-site validations following the completion of the online content component.
What grade do I need to pass the online competencies?
You need a 90% or higher on all quizzes.
How long is the on-site validation?
The on-site validation is one full day, usually a 12-hour shift.
Do I talk to the regional validator directed to schedule my validation?
No. The master validator will coordinate your on-site validation once your competencies have been reviewed and a full quiz summary is complete. The master validator will connect you with your regional validator.
Why can't I use someone at my company to validate me?
To ensure the quality and consistency of the program, the regional validator must be a third party. That is why you pay for a validator to assess you.
How do I log on to my course?

Following approval into the program, an email will be sent to you.  This email provides you with your D2L online login link, username, password, and instructions to log in to your account. D2L is short for Desire to Learn (online learning management system).

It can take up to 10 business days to receive your login information following application. If you are struggling to log in, please contact us at 780 871 5712 or contact the Program Coordinator, michelle.armstrong@lakelandcollege.ca.

Can invoicing be arranged?

Yes, invoicing can be arranged with a sponsorship letter.  Please email a sponsorship letter on your company/agency letterhead to michelle.armstrong@lakelandcollege.ca

A sponsorship letter should include the names of the individual that your company/agency is covering the costs for as well as the course/program information. For more information, call the Program Coordinator at 587.217.2372

Please note:  A consent form will be required for any sponsorship arrangements.
