Alberta Dual Credit Process
High school students from across eastern Alberta have taken dual credit courses through Lakeland College.
Those courses have ranged through environmental sustainability through health care aide and from apprenticeship to play.
Courses for the Winter 2021 semester included:.
- American Sign Language Part 1
- Basic Energy Principles
- Environmental Sustainability
- Hairstyling (safety, personal and professional development & facility and equipment)
- Health, Nutrition and Safety (early learning and childhood education)
- Introduction to Esthetics
- Introduction to Heavy Oil & Gas
- Introduction to Soil Science
- Play (early learning and childcare)
Dual credit courses are open to Alberta students in grades 10 through 12. Classes are live online. Recordings are also on D2L, Lakeland’s learning management system.
Courses, including textbooks, have been free of charge.

American Sign Language I Part A
Course description |
Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), its culture, and the community of Deaf persons who use this language. Learn how to have basic conversations, as well as use appropriate behaviours with the Deaf culture.

Basic Energy Principles
Course description |
A prerequisite course to all other courses in the Sustainability Energy certificate & diploma programs, this course provides students with an understanding of principles of energy systems including electricity, heat, energy movement and water flow.

Environmental Sustainability
Course description |
This course is a requirement in all 4 of Lakeland’s environmental sciences majors as well as the new agricultural sustainability diploma. You’ll focus on human interactions with the environment.

Course description |
This is a required course for Lakeland's [early learning & child care program]. It focuses on the health services foundation with exploration on nutrition and wellness.

Introduction to Esthetics
Course description |
This course will provide you with an overview of safe practices in the workplace regarding bacteriology and sanitation. You will learn to formulate a professional image and practice skills needed to work with the public.

Introduction to Heavy Oil and Gas
Course description |
This non-credit course will explain what heavy oil is and ways heavy oil is produced as well as explore the steps involved in getting heavy oil and natural gas out of the ground and in to the marketplace.

This course is part of the crop technology and general agriculture programs at Lakeland College and will provide students with an overview of soil formation processes and fundamental characteristics of soil.
