Some programs are unique to us:

emergency services technology (EST) diploma - basic firefighting training, then specialize in either fire or emergency medicine
12-week firefighter training program– all of the NFPA 1001 requirements plus extras in this pre-professional program

Firefighter Fundamentals

Course ID: #FE-101

Course Description: Learn essential skills for safe response to Class A and Class B fires. Designed for both prospective and current industrial brigade members. Topics include:

Fire behaviour
Maintenance and safe use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
Portable fire extinguishers
Fire hose, nozzles and couplings
Water and foam fire streams

Prerequisite(s): none

Evaluation: practical evaluation, proctored written exam

Certification: certificate of completion

NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications

Open the door to a fire services career with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 training from ETC.

Courses are available via distance delivery or client hosted. See the NFPA 1001 page for complete program and course details.

If you'd rather complete the training full time over 12 weeks check out our firefighter training program. This programs exceeds the NFPA 1001 requirements. You'll do more practice runs and other hands-on skill building. There's also a blended learning option with 12-weeks of online courses followed by 5 weeks onsite.

NFPA 1002 Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications

NFPA 1140 Wildland Firefighter Qualifications

Learn how to fight wild fires at ETC.

We offer Level 1 of the NFPA 1140 Standard for Wildland Firefighting Personnel Professional Qualifications.

This system for battling wildland fires is widely recognized and used across Canada.

Municipal firefighters who may face grassland, bush, urban parks or forest fires would find this course useful.

It's also a beneficial course for response teams in remote industrial areas and forestry service personnel.

Wildland Firefighter Level I

Course ID: #1051-01
Course Description: This course provides you with the basic knowledge and skills to combat a wildfire. Content includes

basic fire behaviour
firefighter safety
methods of attack including backfire and burnout techniques
water and foam delivery systems, and
air-operations safety

The training is designed for municipal firefighters who may face grassland, bush, or forest fires. It is also suited to industrial firefighters at such sites as forestry plants and to urban municipalities with large park areas.

Prerequisite(s): NFPA 1140 students should have an understanding of and experience demonstrating basic structural firefighter practices prior to instruction. NFPA 1001 level I certification is recommended. Official documentation for the following prerequisite qualifications must be submitted when applying for NFPA 1140 certification:

I-100 Introduction to Incident Command System
Standard First Aid/CPR C (see Alberta Labour’s list of approved medical training providers for the workplace)

NFPA 1081 - Industrial Fire Brigade Member Professional Qualifications

Lay the foundation for a career in an industrial fire brigade with four courses at Lakeland’s Emergency Training Centre (ETC).

Start at the incipient level and move through the advanced exterior and interior structure levels. You may also take a leader level course.

Corporate Training
ETC offers corporate training for businesses that need to train their brigade members. You choose the level or levels for your brigade. We can also customize your training with site specific options.

If you operate apparatus at any level of NFPA 1081, you may be required to meet the NFPA 1002 standards before you receive NFPA 1081 certification.

Incipient Level

Course ID: #IND-104
Course Description: Incipient Level is designed to equip current and prospective brigade members with the basic knowledge of industrial firefighting. Incipient Level is a prerequisite for entry into the Advanced Exterior, Interior Structural and Brigade Leader courses. This course is directed at personnel who would deal with incidents at the incipient stage and provides knowledge of basic fire behaviour, extinguisher, hose, water supply, sprinkler systems, safety orientation, salvage and overhaul, and protecting evidence.

Prerequisite(s): FFTS-S900a or NFPA 1072 Awareness Level

Advanced Exterior Level

Course Description: Advanced Exterior Level is designed to give brigade members the knowledge and skills necessary for fighting exterior industrial fires, including the use of PPE, SCBA, building search and rescue techniques, advanced exterior firefighting techniques, and more.

FFTS-S1200 or NFPA 1072 Operations Level

Course Description: Interior Structural Level is designed to give brigade members the knowledge and skills necessary for fighting interior structural fires, with the use of PPE, SCBA, building search and rescue, and more.

Industrial Fire Brigade Leader Level

Course ID: #IND-110

Course Description: Industrial Fire Brigade Leader Level is designed to give brigade members the knowledge and skills necessary to become brigade leaders. The course covers command structure and fireground organization, communications, and strategy and tactics. The Brigade Leader Level takes 36 hours to complete, including the theory and practical components.

Prerequisite(s):

FFTS-S900a
a level for which the person will be the brigade leader (i.e., Incipient, Advanced Exterior or Interior Structural)
