The listed courses cover the two years of technical training required by Alberta Apprenticeship & Industry Training (AIT).
After you complete your certificate at Lakeland, you must find an employer and become a registered apprentice. You’ll need 2,800 work hours before you write your final journeyperson exam.

ST 151 Occupational Skills and Apprenticeship Training - 2 credits |
This course provides the student with an overview of the requirements of a safe working environment in which to practice hairstyling. Topics in the program focus on general and personal safety, hygiene and infection control, understanding of provincial regulations and understanding of the professional ethics that should be practiced and adhered to in the hairstyling profession. ST 152 Salon Operations, Consultation, Tools & Equipment - 3 credits |
This course provides the student with an overview of the requirements, care and use of the equipment necessary for the hairstyling professional and the professional requirements in a salon. Pre/co-requisites: None |
ST 153 Hair & Scalp Care - 3 credits |
This course provides an overview of the anatomy of the hair and its function and of hair types and conditions. The correct use of various hair analysis methods and tools and the recording of the findings are also considered. Pre/co-requisites: None |
ST 154 Cutting Hair - 7 credits |
This course provides the student with an overview of the basic types of haircuts for men and women and an understanding of the theory the fundamentals of haircutting. Students also learn to identify cutting varying types of textures, as well as the foundations and skills to effectively style clients' hair from wet to dry. Additionally students learn to use hair products and tools for a specific style and hair texture. Pre/co-requisites: None. |
ST 155 Hair Styling - 3 credits |
This course is an overview of using colour to promote harmony. Course content includes colour, physiology, skin tone, and the relationships with different colours. Pre/co-requisites: None |
ST 156 Public Clinic & Practicum I - 4 credits |
This course is a practical work experience for Hairstyling students. Students gain hands on experience in a work setting allowing them to apply and put into practice the knowledge and skills learned in theory and lab courses. P/F. Prerequisites: Successful completion of all of the previous course work. Co-requisites: None |
ST 157 Chemically Wave & Relax Hair - 4 credits |
This course provides the student with an introduction to chemical texturizing (perm waving) and hair relaxing and curl reforming. Pre/co-requisites: None |
ST 158 Colour Hair - 4 credits |
This course provides the student with an introduction to hair coloring techniques and the effects it has on the hair. Pre/co-requisites: None |
ST 159 Specialized Services & Standards - 1 credit |
This course provides the student with advanced skills to style client's hair to effectively apply an advanced styling approach. Students learn special techniques, procedures, the use of specialty tools, and advanced finishing artistry. Prerequisites: ST 151, ST 152, ST 153, ST 154, ST 155 & ST 156. Co-requisites: None |
ST 160 Public Clinic & Practicum II - 8 credits |
This course is a practical work experience for Hairstyling students. Students gain hands on experience in a work setting allowing them to apply and put into practice the knowledge and skills learned in theory and lab courses. P/F.
