Admission requirements
Academic requirements
Either: English 20-1 or 20-2 with a minimum grade of 60%
Or: English 30-1 or 30-2 with a minimum grade of 55%
Notes:
- If you didn’t attend an Alberta high school, please refer to the English provincial subject equivalencies.
- If you don’t meet the admission requirements, please refer to special admissions.
- If you were educated outside Canada, you must complete an ACCUPLACER (assessment placement test) deemed equivalent to the academic requirement.
English Language Proficiency requirement
In addition to the academic English requirement, all applicants, regardless of citizenship or country of origin, must show English Language Proficiency (ELP). Please refer to the drop down below for more details.
You can meet English proficiency requirements in one of these ways:
- By completing high school in Canada. If you did, it must have been in English at an approved Canadian high school (grades 9, 10, 11, 12) with at least 3 consecutive years of full-time academic study.
- By completing a recognized post-secondary degree or diploma program in Canada. The program must have involved at least 2 full years of full-time, consecutive academic study in English.
- By completing an approved English Language Proficiency test and achieve the required results. The accepted tests are listed below:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS): minimum score of 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 on each band score on the academic test.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT): minimum score of 71 on the internet-based test (iBT).
- Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) General: minimum score of 7, with no section score below 6 on the general test.
- Canadian Language Benchmarks/Milestones Test: minimum score of 7 in each strand.
- Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses (CELBAN): 7 in each area of listening, reading, writing and speaking. Not an average, 7 is the minimum score.
- Duolingo English Test: minimum score is 100 overall, with no sub-score below 95.
Notes:
- Official results must be submitted directly to Lakeland College.
- Results must be within two years of your program's start date.
- IELTS Academic and TOEFL results are valid for two years from the day of testing. Results that expire before your program's start date don't be accepted.

There are now 2 requirements to graduate with a health care aide certificate:
- minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.7
- successful completion of the provincial comprehensive final exam
