HE 161 Health Care Aide Roles & Responsibilities - 3 credits |
During this course, your focus is on the role and responsibilities of a health care aide working in a variety of employment settings. The focus of this course is to share information that results in safe, ethical, and respectful care based on the needs of the client. Care that meets these standards is known as person-centered care. This course consists of 40 hours of lecture and 5 hours of lab. Prerequisites: None. Co-requisites: HE 162, HE 163 & HE 164 |
HE 162 The Human Body, Health, & Chronic Illness - 3 credits |
This course focuses on the study of the systems that make up the human body and discusses the milestones of growth and development across the lifespan. It is an introduction to foundational knowledge of the most common of the chronic illnesses that a health care aide may encounter. This course consists of 45 hours of lecture. Prerequisites: None. Co-requisites: HE 161, HE 163 & HE 164. |
HE 163 Communication & Documentation in the Health-Care Environment - 4 credits |
This course focuses on the role and responsibilities of the health care aide when communicating effectively as a member of the collaborative care team. Strong communication skills are an important part of being a successful health care aide. The health-care environment requires competent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills, which are part of digital literacy. This course consists of 30 hours of lecture and 30 hours of lab. Prerequisites: None. Co-requisites: HE 161, HE 162 & HE 164 |
HE 164 Providing Person-Centered Care & Comfort - 5 credits |
During this course, you learn the basic care skills that allow you to give safe and efficient care to your clients. This course consists of 29 hours of lecture and 46 hours of lab. Prerequisites: None. Co-requisites: HE 161, HE 162 & HE 163 |
HE 165 Health Care Aide Clinical Placement I - 3 credits |
During this clinical placement you experience the role of the health care aide by working under the direction of a regulated health-care professional. You get the opportunity to work in a continuing care setting such as home care, supportive living (designated supportive living or DSL), senior lodges, long term care, and group homes. This course consists of 80 hours of clinical education and practice. P/F. Prerequisites: HE 161, HE 162, HE 163 & HE 164. Co-requisites: None This course must be completed prior to the start of HS 167 Special Activities for Clients with Various Health Conditions.

HE 166 Meeting Complex Care Needs - 5 credits |
This course builds on the foundational skills and concepts introduced in previous courses and also introduces new skills such as medication assistance. Learners have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge to learn advanced skills such as active and passive range-of-motion exercises, ostomy care, respiratory care, catheter care, and tube feeds. In addition, accurate measurement of vital signs is demonstrated, practiced, and assessed. This course consists of 24 hours of lecture and 51 hours of lab. Prerequisites: HE 161, HE 162, HE 163 & HE 164. Co-requisite: Can be delivered alongside HE 165. |
HE 167 Special Activities for Clients with Various Health Conditions - 5 credits |
This course discusses care strategies for assisting diverse client groups such as clients with a mental health diagnosis and clients with developmental delays and physical disabilities. This course consists of 51 hours of lecture and 24 hours of lab. Prerequisite: HE 165. Co-requisite: None |
HE 168 Health Care Aide Clinical Placement II - 5 credits |
During the second clinical placement, you experience the role of the health care aide by working under the direction of a regulated health-care professional. You get the opportunity to work in a variety of health-care settings such as continuing care or acute care. This course consists of 160 hours of clinical education and practice. P/F. Prerequisites: HE 166 & HE 167. Co-requisites: None |
HE 169 Health Care Aide Consolidated Clinical Placement - 3 credits |
This is the final clinical placement course where you practice the role of the health care aide by working under the direction of a regulated health-care professional and buddied with an unregulated health-care professional. You work in a variety of health-care settings such as continuing care or acute care. This course consists of 80 hours of clinical education and practice. P/F. Prerequisite: HE 168. Co-requisites: None |
