ASL 101 American Sign Language I Part A - 3 credits |
In this course, students are introduced to American Sign Language (ASL), its culture, and to the community of Deaf persons who use this language. Students learn how to have basic conversations as well as use appropriate behaviours within the Deaf Community. Pre/co-requisites: None |
ASL 102 American Sign Language Level I - Part B - 3 credits |
In this course, students are introduced to American Sign Language (ASL), its culture, and to the community of Deaf persons who use this language. Students learn how to have basic conversations as well as use appropriate behaviors within the Deaf Community. Prerequisite: ASL 101. Co-requisites: None |
ASL 201 American Sign Language Level II - Part A - 3 credits |
Encouraged to talk about people in a more abstract way than ASL 101 and ASL 102 and talk about the environment removed from the classroom. Focus on development of language receptive and expressive skills. Prerequisites: ASL 101, ASL 102. Co-requisites: None |
ASL 202 American Sign Language Level II - Part B - 3 credits |
In this course, students explore ASL expressive and receptive skills by further delving into story-telling, and learning how to incorporate characterization, and descriptions of personality traits and opinions. Prerequisite: ASL 201. Co-requisites: None |
ASL 301 American Sign Language Level III - Part A - 3 credits |
This course introduces students to concepts that further develop their ASL production, usage of ASL grammar and syntax, and that strengthen foundational learning to increase their ASL discourse and fluency. Prerequisite: ASL 202. Co-requisites: None |
ASL 302 American Sign Language Level III - Part B - 3 credits |
In this course, students learn about how Deaf people use ASL in different types of discourses. The material presented focuses on building narrative skills, moving from an informal to a more formal presentation, developing language skills needed to explain ideas, concepts, illustrate how things work and why things are the way they are. Prerequisite: ASL 301. Co-requisites: None |
ASL 303 American Sign Language Level III - Part C - 3 credits |
In this course, students learn advanced nuances of story-telling in ASL. The material presented focuses on both formal and informal story-telling and sharing of events with more intricate detail of characters and number of characters or items within a story or event. Prerequisite: ASL 302. Co-requisites: None |
CO 118 Communication Skills - 3 credits |
This communications course focuses on the development of academic and practical Human Services related writing skills. Students develop critical thinking skills and strategies for integrating their own ideas with those of other authors following APA guidelines for quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing source material. Students also develop skills in resume and cover letter writing, and in crafting other written documents used in the human services related workplace. Pre/co-requisites: None |
LS 101 - Deaf Culture and Community I - 3 credits |
This course builds on Deaf Culture and Community I to provide the student with Deaf cultural and community issues. Students are provided material on Deaf education, service agencies, and advocacy. Prerequisite: ASL 300 or equivalent. Co-requisites: None |
LS 102 - Deaf Culture and Community II - 3 credits |
This course builds on Deaf Culture and Community I to provide the student with Deaf cultural and community issues. Students are provided material on Deaf education, service agencies, and advocacy. Prerequisite: LS 101. Co-requisites: None |
